Offered here for consideration is one of the most unique and all-around badass military vehicles on the market today. Steyr-Daimler-Puch of Austria began developing the Pinzgauer in the late 1960’s, naming it after a hearty Austrian horse breed. This first generation Pinzgauers, like the 1974 model offered here, was designed as a high-mobility all terrain-conquering military vehicle, used by armies in Austria as well as Switzerland, U.K., Saudi Arabia, and Bolivia.
The benefits this versatile vehicle offered were its easy-access service (engine is literally located in the center console) along with its incredible 4x4 capability, an air-cooled engine, and more than one oil pump so that no matter how the vehicle is oriented it will not be starved of oil. The design of the chassis contributes to it’s off road abilities; the vehicle has a central tube chassis with a transaxle to help distribute weight more evenly and keep a lower center of gravity. The differentials are sealed and require little lubrication. The axles are portal, meaning that the axle tube is above the center of the wheel, which allows for higher ground clearance.
This 74 Pinzgauer was a radio unit with a full desk in the rear for broadcasting. It also has a “sunroof” above the passenger seat for some fresh air, or to mount your assault rifle. The truck recently underwent a thorough paint job and has been kept up to date mechanically. This is not your everyday driver, clearly, but it actually drives down the road well, but is even better suited for climbing two-tracks, or mountains. Whichever you prefer.
