Pontiac benefitted from GM's massive redesign for 1955, sharing much of its styling cues with contemporary Chevrolets and Buicks. The Chieftain's stance was unique as it was wider and lower with straight-through fender lines and two-tone paint divided by bright trim work. The hoods had wide stainless stripes down each side and the massive front bumper was divided. Pontiac's new look set it apart from its Chevy and Buick counter parts and the unmistakable styling pushed Pontiacs sales past 500,000 units for the first time, placing Pontiac sixth in sales for the first time. The engine for 1956 was a compliment of the new for 1955 "Strato-Streak" overhead valve V8 bumping the displacement from 287 CID to 316 CID. The Chieftain came in either a: 2 Door Sedan, 4-Door and Station Wagon configuration.
The 1956 Chieftain 2 door sedan offered here was built at the Kansas City Factory in the original color combination of two tone marina blue / Nimbus Grey exterior paint over two tone Black Cloth / Ivory Vinyl interior. Some time in the last 60 years the color combination was change to equally attractive Red / Black two tone exterior and interior. This Pontiac remains an very solid example featuring extremely good bones for any restoration or customization. The car still features its 318 V8, Hydra-matic automatic transmission and rear end. The car runs, moves and stops and appears very complete featuring all trim, bright work, good glass, interior trim, factory radio, wheel covers, spare tire, jack, spare parts and a rock solid untouched original frame and underside
