The most advanced automobile of its era, the Citroën SM combined the French automaker’s legendary technology with the fine performance of a Maserati Engine. The Maserati V-6 was mounted in the front of the car, situated behind the front axle predicting the "front mounted mid-engine" layout that would be utilized decades later in other super cars. With triple Weber carburetion the SM was capable of reaching 140mph! Citroën’s famous pneumatic suspension, which could be adjusted to suit the road surface, and brakes ensured a cloud-like ride and stupendous stopping power. The SM’s bodywork was so aerodynamic that rain simply slipped off the windshield with speed. The result was a superb handling, adequately powered, GT Coupe with plenty of room for four! At the time it was the fastest front-wheel-drive automobile available. When British comedian Paul Daniels was pulled over for speeding in his SM he attempted to amuse the police officer by moving the suspension lever back and forth, causing the car to move up and down, and saying, “It’s out of breath and panting.”
Upon it's debut, the SM was adored by automotive journalists and race car drivers alike. It drew in a diverse group of personalities such as the Shah of Iran, Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, Celebrities Cheech & Chong, "Bonanza" actor Lorne Greene, and musicians Carlos Santana and The Rolling Stones all of whom understood the appeal. Between 1970 and 1975, 12,920 were made, of which only 2,400 were originally delivered to the United States.
