For Sale at Auction: 1981 London Taxicab in Owls Head, Maine

Vehicle Description

Meet Wally, a 1981 London Taxicab built in hopes of creating an American market for these distinctive vehicles. In 1981, the Checker Cab Company announced that it was going to cease the production of its famous taxicab model. Sensing a business opportunity, Austin Motor Car, Ltd., under its London Taxicab subsidiary, custom built two of its famous taxis as samples to be used by New York cabbies. The taxi drivers did not care for this “new” design for a variety of reasons, and no more were made. This particular cab was sold to a gentleman farmer in North Carolina, where it was found and acquired by an innkeeper, Normand Dugas, who gave the cab its moniker, Wally. This vehicle is designed to hold five passengers comfortably, has a maximum speed of 50 mph, and gets approximately 50 miles to the gallon with its 4-cylinder diesel engine. Wally’s sister cab is still in active use as a hired cab in New York City. A fun car like this rarely comes up for sale, and this could be a wonderful addition to any collection. Sold with a recent registration.
