Named Motor Trend's car of the year when it was introduced in 1967, the new Mercury Cougar was based on the newly redesigned '67 Ford Mustang but was intended to be a more elegant Pony car that would exude a bit more class and yet still encompass the qualities that made the Mustang so popular as a smaller sporty coupe that could handle well and still be economical enough for the younger customer. To differentiate it from its Ford sibling, the new Cougar was given a split grille that housed hidden headlights while in the back, a similar design accented the sequential taillights while other refinements such as a slightly redesigned front suspension and sound deadening package gave the Cougar a more comfortable quieter ride. This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 is equipped with a 302ci V8 engine mated to Mercury's Merc-O-Matic three speed automatic transmission, and features air conditioning, power brakes, and power steering. Newly introduced for the 1968 model year, the XR-7 package adds further interior refinements with burled walnut trim on the dash, and a gauge package which features a 6,000RPM tachometer, and gauges for amps, fuel, water temperature, and oil pressure. The center console features a clock as well as an upgraded Custom Autosound vintage-look radio with auxiliary hookups and upgraded speakers in the rear parcel shelf, and the car comes with its original Philco AM unit as well. The odometer shows 55,947 miles, which are believed to be original. Both the interior and exterior of the car have been restored, and the Cougar now sports a Pearl White exterior with a tan interior, both of which show very well, and the seats, carpet, and headliner are free of rips, stains, or other damage. The car rides on a set of stock wheels and hubcaps which are wrapped in Super Star Radial GT 225/70R14 tires. Other features include a Viper alarm with keyless entry, while the side and rear windows have been tastefully tinted. This Cougar XR-7 starts easily and runs well, and with the upgrades it's been given it's a super comfortable cruiser that'll turn heads wherever you go.
