Gateway Classic Cars of St. Louis is proud to offer a unique opportunity for Shelby lovers. Up for sale is a 1968 Ford Mustang GT500KR. Carrol Shelby and Ford had already worked together on the GT350 in the previous generation, so it was fitting when they came out with a GT350 for the 67-68 model years. In '67 they also introduced a big block variant labeled the GT500. The 1968 GT500s were slightly different from the previous generation as they used the 428 Cobra Jet. The top of the line Shelby for 1968 was the GT500KR. KR stood for king of the road, and with nearly 400 horsepower (despite the under rated factory figure), these cars truly were the King. Only 1,053 lucky buyers were able to hop behind the wheel of a brand new KR in '68. KRs could be had with either a 4 speed, or a C6 3 speed automatic. These cars came with wood grain interiors, power front disc brakes, and staggered rear shocks. Rocker striping labeled these cars clearly "GT500 KR" and a nice Cobra badge on the fender gave a hint as to the Cobra Jet under the hood. This particular example, has a bit of a unique history. This car is a mostly unrestored example that has had the same owner since 1978. The car was used for car club events throughout the 1980s, but has spent quite a few years in storage since. To bring the car back out onto the road, it's received a new gas tank, new brakes, and new exhaust. The car fires up, runs, and drives like a muscle car should. It's amazing to believe this car has only 46,119 original miles on the odometer. This car is begging to be driven. This one has the optional C6 automatic as well as plenty of other options: AC, AM/FM/8 track, cruise control, hub caps, power brakes, power steering, tilt column, seat belts, padded roll bar, vinyl interior with wood grain, and Bias Ply Polyglas tires. This was the most powerful and most luxurious Mustang ever in its time. This is a unique piece of Mustang history that would be a wonderful addition to any Mustang collection.
