In 1959, Oldsmobile began a new styling cycle that they proclaimed as “so totally new…so typically Olds!” They introduced a new figure and form, with a new-for-1959 “Linear Look” in all three series offered. The cars were notable for expanded vision with nearly 40 percent greater total glass area, and they also increased the passenger room and available luggage space across the model line.
Perhaps this Linear Look styling advance is best exemplified by the exciting pillarless Holiday Sport Sedan’s unique, fleet roof line and elegantly presented full wraparound rear window. From the passenger’s point of view, this smart styling cue was a rousing success with exceptional visibility and added enjoyment of the miles passed with unlimited landscapes. Nineteen fifty-nine also saw the introduction of a new Rocket V-8 that was touted for its power, economy and quietness.
This car is reported as highly original with one repaint. The subtle two-tone appears to have a color quite similar to Code F Crystal Green on the main lower portion and with the similar two-tone cloth and vinyl interior and wide whitewall tires; this makes for a most fresh and inviting late ‘50s American specialty sedan. Oldsmobile also offered a more family-styled four-door sedan with door posts, quarter windows and less severe convex rear window. Both were popular with approximately 38,000 of each body style produced.
Amongst the equipment on this Holiday Sport Sedan is an AM pushbutton radio with rear speaker, clock, courtesy lamps, tinted glass, back-up lights, dual sideview mirrors, factory spinner-style “color accent wheel discs;” power steering and brakes. Distinctive and bold front and rear fascia, tasteful trim elements and high-set taillights properly represents the dynamic American styling of the era.
