The Maserati Mistral is a 2 seater sports car produced from 1963 to 1970, which was designed to succeed the iconic 3500GT. It was the last of Maserati’s cars to feature the classic six cylinder double overhead cam engine, which was essentially the same unit that had been fitted to the Grand Prix winning 250Fs of the mid to late 1950s. Available in both coupe and roadster (Sypder) forms the Mistral had a number of innovative features including a shortened square tube chassis, all round disc brakes and Lucas mechanical fuel injection. Both variants were bodied by Maggiora of Turin and were produced in limited numbers with the Spyder being the rarer of the two with just 125 examples in total.
The car offered here is fitted with the correct 3.5 litre engine and, unlike many other examples which were subsequently retro-fitted with Weber carburettors, retains its original Lucas fuel injection. Being one of just 20 right hand drive cars produced, and one of two known survivors, it is an incredibly rare car. Built in 1966 it is believed that the car was displayed at the Turin Motor show before being registered HUJ310D and sold via the UK Maserati concessionaire to its first owner, Mr Elias Houry, who was a banker based in London. It subsequently passed through the hands of four additional keepers until it found a home in the mid-1970s in the collection of well-known enthusiast Thomas Walduck. Mr Walduck kept the car for around nine years before selling it on to Marque specialists Corley Motors in 1993 who undertook a meticulous restoration. Subsequently the car was sold on to a number of new owners who each continued to maintain the car at no-expense-spared but used it only sparingly, which is confirmed by the original mileage of just 88,500 miles and bills totalling in excess of £80,000 for the last ten years. Offered in its original colour scheme of 'Red Arcoveggio' paint with magnolia hide and accompanied by an incredibly rare factory hard-top and extensive history file, this car represents a superb opportunity to acquire a classic hand-built Italian Spyder with matchless provenance.
