For Sale: 1987 Buick Grand National in Halton Hills, Ontario

Vehicle Description

1987 Buick Grand National For Sale - 108 Original Miles, All Original And Like Brand New LMC is proud to offer for sale this 1987 Buick Grand National. The Buick Regal Grand National debuted in ‘82 and was named after the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series. Buick had won the Manufacturers Cup in 1981 and 1982, and wanted to capitalize on its success based on "What wins on Sunday, sells on Monday". The Grand National was a Buick success and the 1987 model was the final model of this generation. Buick started with a few basic ideas for the styling and performance of the Grand National. Styling was the squared off straight lines of that era. Buick modifications were minimal; a subtle rear spoiler, “power bulge” in the hood, and a black plastic front air dam to keep the car trimmed out at high speeds. The GN looked bad to the bone in Black with black out trim. The interior was finished in a plethora of gray tones in special cloth fabrics. The instrumentation was basic but at least Buick understood the need to add a tach and a boost gauge. Naturally the ride was improved with the suspension having stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, plus large radials on special wheels. For power, Buick recognized that the big-block days were over and, after resurrecting its original V-6 from the 1960s, Buick went the turbo route and later came an intercooler. By 1987 there were 245 horses running under the black hood. For identification the orange and red “Six with an Arrow” logo artistically reflects the shape of a turbocharger and is tastefully placed on the exterior, centers of the Chrome Wheels and on the Headrests. True back then and certainly today with the latest Star Wars movie sensation. The stealthy appearance of the all-Black Grand National with the resemblance of its grill to Darth Vader’s infamous Helmet Mouthpiece earned it the title "Darth Vader's Car" by the car magazine writers. As well due to the Six Cylinder these Grand Nationals were sometimes referred to as the "Dark Side" in contrast with the more common V8 Mustangs and Camaros. This 1987 Buick Grand National was originally delivered to Bill Cook Buick in Farm Hills, Michigan. This Buick has both a majestic and menacing look in all-Black. The cloth interior, Black with Grey seating inserts, shows as new. Under the hood, that unassumingly states 3.8 SFI TURBO, sits the 3.8L/231 cu.in. Turbocharged V6 with Intercooler. The four-speed Automatic Transmission is a worthy partner for this engine. The engine’s mechanical sounds and exhaust notes are very different from those of the big-block V8s of the early 1970s, but the V6 sounds powerful and muscular nonetheless. These Buicks were known to give a smooth quality ride although Grand Nationals were the kings of the dragstrip in their day and proved there is a replacement for displacement. Performance was reported to be 0-to-60 in a tick over six seconds with quarter mile posting of 14.7 sec @ 95.1 mph. Absolutely loaded with AC, PB, Electronic Door Locks, PW, PTrunk, Cruise, PS/Tilt, AM/FM/Cassette/PAntenna and Dr. Remote/Dual Mirrors. Of course a car purchased with the intent of holding on to comes with items like the Original Window Sticker, Owner’s Manual, Warranty Book, Maintenance Scheduler, Service Checklist, Sound System Manual, Tire Policy, and several Chassis and Service Manuals.  Having covered only 108 miles from new the car is a complete time capsule, all original and smells like new!  It has lived in a climate controlled environment and been owned by a true collector whom took the utmost care to preserve this wonderful example.   These Buicks certainly went against the grain versus the traditional definition of an American “Muscle Car”. Suppose the unique traits of this Buick were enough for at least one collector to tuck it away for safekeeping as it has had a gentle life with only 108 miles. The old slogan “Wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick” means something again with this fine 1987 Buick Grand National still in showroom like condition.
