In the early 1960s, Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance, however, with GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing Pontiac's young, visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The famous GTO name was John DeLorean's (DMC founder) idea inspired by a Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation of Gran Turismo Omologato (Homologated) which means officially certified for racing in the grand tourer class - Muscle car fans affectionately refer to the GTO's as the 'Goat'. The second generation GTO began in 1968 and garnered Motor Trend Magazine’s Car of the Year award. Only minor changes were made for the 1969 model such as eliminating the front door vent windows, a slight grille and taillight revision, moving the ignition key from the dashboard to the steering column, the gauge faces changed from steel blue to black and the rear quarter-panel mounted side marker lamps changed to an emblem shaped like the broad GTO badge. This 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge was built in Pontiac Michigan and shipped on April 8th,1969 to the GM dealer, Scott McGaw Motor Company in Madisonville, KY. Tthe PHS documents confirm its ultra rare and very desirable factory combination of, (Code 554) The Judge option, with (Code 347) Ram Air IV, a 400 cu. in V8 engine, (Code 358) a Close Ratio 4 speed, (Code 361) Heavy Duty Safe-T-Track rear end, as well as, covered headlamps and power front disc brakes. The engine and engine bay have been highly detailed and the presentation appears factory new with the correct details in place such as the Ram Air IV air filter components sitting on the famed aluminum intake with a Holley carburetor. The GTO RAIV engines had 10.75:1 compression and amongst other items, provided a larger 4 barrel and longer intake valve lift duration producing what most believe is an understated 370HP with 445 lbs of torque. The under car chassis has also received much time and attention to detail. The frame has been sandblasted and painted with all supporting components having been disassembled, cleaned, properly painted or replaced. The fuel tank and fuel lines are new, as are the brake lines. The proper exhaust system will accompany the car onto its next caretaker.
