We appreciate the “sleeper” look. In most cases, a Custom 300 would have been powered by a wimpy six cylinder engine. But this car was born for special duty.
It was built with the highest horsepower engine available, the 300 HP 352 cubic inch FE motor. It has the Cruise-o-Matic transmission and the tough Ford 9 inch rear end. The rear end has a 3.10 gear ratio. Of course it has dual exhaust.
This car was built at the Kansas City plant for the Colorado State Patrol. It was a highway cruiser during its working days. It has always been Colonial White and had a recent repaint. We don’t know what the exterior markings were while it was on duty. We do have the original Federal red light and the big chrome siren. Both work. The siren is actuated by a push button in the floor.
The body looks great. It doesn’t appear to have been damaged or rotted. The bumpers are both very nice, as is the rest of the chrome and stainless. All the glass is good.
Currently it rolls on painted steel wheels and radial whitewall tires. I would love to see it without the beauty rings and with bias-ply blackwall tires.
The engine runs good. It doesn’t smoke or omit undesired noises. The transmission shifts as it should. The brakes work properly. All features function including gauges and lights. The doors lock via key. There is a spare tire and jack in the trunk.
The interior is very nice and original appearing. It looks so good it has to have been redone. The upholstery is two-tone brown vinyl. The rubber floor mat is in good shape.
The odometer reads 86,XXX. Considering the overall condition of the car, this could be the actual mileage. But we have no proof of that statement.
This is the perfect SLEEPER. Actually, that is exactly what it was built to be. Nothing fancy, light weight and big horsepower. Perfect highway cruiser, both then and now.
