I am the only owner this car has had. I ordered it from a dealer in Germany, specifying each feature I wanted or didn't want on the car, and picked it up from the factory in Stuttgart. It was shipped to the Port of Long Beach, California, and has been in California ever since. Before I took possession of it in Long Beach, I had it converted to US/California emissions and safety standards. When I took it in for the first smog test, the referee said he couldn't measure any emissions and that I probably was cleaning the air as I drove the car.
It has both tops, hard and soft. Driven locally only – 180,000 miles. The vehicle runs well. Includes original halogen headlights (clipped leads) which were replaced by incandescent lights during conversion because halogens weren't permitted in the US at the time (incandescent lights are still on the car). Also includes the first aid kit, tool kit (including both mounting wrenches for the tops), jack, emergency warning signs, original Mercedes keys (2), and wallet key. Clear title.
I am selling the car because it deserves to be restored and I just don't have the time or inclination to do that. I'll leave that to the second owner.
Condition:
Drives well, passes California smog test.
This Mercedes is a California car in it's purist form: No snow, no salted or gravel roads. Stored and driven in the California Central Coast in a mild environment. If you are seeking an appreciating 280SL to enjoy as-is or restore, you have located your vehicle.
Needs to be replaced:
AC compressor
Leather seats/upholstery
Dash has cracks
Soft top: The plastic window inserts
Radio antenna
Plastic grill pieces – front.
Some outside door/body trim strips
Ash tray
