Studebaker moved up-market and into the luxury car segment with
their President model line. The goal of the President was to be the
finest, most powerful, dependable, and luxurious car on the
American market. The President was given a powerful eight-cylinder
engine that was worthy of the elegant coachwork that it carried.
The engine earned Studebaker a reputation in power, performance and
endurance. The Studebaker President stayed in production until 1942
and later reappeared in 1955. By establishing land speed records,
the President cemented its name in the performance department. The
powerful eight-cylinder engine captured 114 records, 35 of which
would stand for 35 years. The long bodies meant there was plenty of
interior room for the passengers and no expense was spared when
creating these automotive marvels. Following Studebaker's
acquisition of Packardin 1954, the President line was added as a
new top-of-the-line model for Studebaker, slightly closing the gap
between the Studebaker line and the Packard's mid-priced Clippers.
The President was an excellent addition to their economy car,
Champion and mid-priced Commander lines, and helped Studebaker
round out its product lineup. Studebaker's 1955 cars most
prominently featured a large chrome grille. Under the hood, a
259-cid V8 with a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhausts provided
the car with 185 hp. The new "Passmaster" V8 was well named, and
was available with overdrive transmission or Studebaker Automatic
Drive. Studebaker Presidents were the champions of 1950s American
motoring, with smart engineering and clever design. This is a fine
example of the "First American family-size sports car", Studebakers
in general have very good club support, making ownership all the
more enjoyable, and parts and maintenance are relatively simple to
secure. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!... Please see our other inventory for
