BMW Sidecar - Restored BMW Sidecar with Replica Frame and BMW Airhead Twin Motor. R-60
This bike has had a complete nut and bolt restoration by Jimbo's Classic Sidecars. Jimbo's has an excellent reputation of quality workmanship and service. He has been restoring CJs and transplanting BMW engines for quite some time. This cycle is a testament to his great workmanship.
The bike had a complete and extensive professional Spring tune-up at CAC Vintage Motorcycles in Minneapolis in April 2010, prior to purchase by the current owner. John at CAC has been working on and restoring vintage bikes for many years. He knows his way around these classic Airhead BMW Motors.
This is a truly classic 1965 cycle. Here is some of the history behind this offering. The engine is a rock solid BMW Airhead Twin. These engines are precision German engineering. BMW Airheads are completely reliable and capable of well over 100,000 miles with proper care and maintenance. The frame of this bike is a classic Chang Jiang Chinese copy of the BMW R71. These bikes are great on there own, but the 1930s technology side valve engines are not set up to modern standards and were unreliable. This is why this bike has been completely re-built using the BMW engine.
The bike has undergone a complete and total restoration. The entire bike was disassembled and stripped to bare metal. All welds were inspected and re-welded where necessary. The cycle and sidecar are powder coated. The tank and fenders are painted in classic red. The entire wiring harness was removed and replaced with new to bring the bike up to modern standards. All bearings have been replaced. The transmission and final drive unit were completely rebuilt using modern bearings. All chrome parts were re-chromed. The engine, transmission, and final drive unit have all been polished to a mirror like finish.
Every effort was taken to upgrade the R/60 engine. The charging system was replaced with a modern Euromotto 3 phase generator kit to replace the old school diode board system. Carbs are new replacements. It has heavy duty Barnett cables. Every nut and bolt of this bike has been replaced using stainless steel fasteners where needed. This bike is in new condition with only a few minor blemishes associated with normal use.
The bike has only 2089 miles on it since the restoration. Many spare parts are included with the sale.
The titling of the bike has been completed. It is listed as a 1965 BMW R/60 with a clear Minnesota title.
