1940 Mercury Eight Convertible Coupe
A unique modernized, non-cookie cutter, classic street rod
professionally built with a rust-free original show car. Where
rarity and desirability combine to create value, this epitome of
beautiful 'fat-fender' curves was recognized in a 2014 NSRA Street
Scene magazine when entered in the Rocky Mountain Street Rod
Nationals. This tastefully modified, well engineered rendition of
the second and final year of the first generation Mercury
-described by its Ford designer Bob Gregorie as "more important
looking" (with it's longer hood, wider body, and fuller, better
proportioned fenders) than the "stubby appearance" of it's smaller
FORD cousin- is a beautiful unique example of a pre-war
'fat-fender' survivor. The modernized, lowered, mild California
raked stance, all-Ford drive-train and chassis consists of
modified/reinforced orig. X-frame accommodating a 1989 Mustang GT
5.0 H O (Mass Air injected), highway gearing: AOD w/trans cooler,
Lincoln Versailles 9" rear, parallel leafs, Mustang II IFS and 2014
front brake upgrade to Wilwood heavy duty finned 11" rotors to
improve the power 4 wheel discs. Care was taken to preserve the Art
Deco originality of the dashboard instruments in addition to the
working rotating antenna, adapting the orig. steering column and
shifter to a trans. shift kit and power steering (integrating
a '42 Mercury horn ring to maintain it's period look).
Vintage Air, TEA's Design seats, seat belts (3 pt. front, lap
rear), LED taillights and third brake/running light enhance comfort
and safety. The all important wheel treatment was addressed in 2013
by mounting the Diamond Back radials on 15" powder coat 'big &
little' steelies to accommodate the Merc. caps unique to 1940 with
trim rings. This classic's convertible value is bolstered by it's
distinct look whether top down or up. When up, the 'blind quarter'
premium fabric top enhances it's pre-war convertible coupe appeal.
The well cared for 55k miles is consistent with the good condition
paint (w/some flaws) of this mechanically sound reliable driver.
With it's great sounding custom dual exhaust -not too loud- and
it's vintage beauty, you will thoroughly enjoy the experience of
head turning cruisin' and car show interest in the uniqueness of
this pre-war gem. A set of vintage steel skirts, digital graphics
for a '40 Merc tribute T-shirt, the Street Scene photo issue, orig.
1940 Mercury brochure, and premium fabric car cover are included.
