The Eleanor Mustangs, which you've surely heard of by now, have become a legitimate cultural phenomenon. And while there are plenty of early Eleanor fastbacks running around, this 2008 Shelby GT500 has been upgraded to emulate the most famous Mustang of all and now packs 650 horsepower's worth of nastiness.
So you start with one ultra-clean, low-mileage Shelby GT500 and add every aftermarket performance part you can think of to improve every aspect of its performance, and this is pretty much what you get. With just 5386 miles on the odometer, you know it's still showroom fresh and the body and paint still look new. Of course, this doesn't look like your average GT500, thanks to an Eleanor-spec hood with its trademark power dome, a set of side skirts with built-in exhaust pipes, a front bumper with Eleanor's built-in driving lights, and some GT500E decals in the right place. No, nobody's going to mistake this for a garden-variety Shelby. All those upgraded parts were finished to OEM standards and bolted in place, giving the car a lean, sleek appearance that was lacking in some of the late-model Mustangs. Tinted windows, hood pins, and side scoops in both the quarters and the C-pillars round out the list of modifications that are pure Mustang and look great here.
The original Shelby interior didn't need a lot of dressing up, what with those gorgeous two-tone seats and contrasting stitching on the leather bits. With the low mileage, everything remains in virtually as-new condition and the modifications are tasteful and simple, including a set of Super Snake instruments sitting up on top of the dash in their own custom pod. A billet shifter for the 6-speed manual gearbox and, of course, the requisite Shelby signatures all make this a car that lives up to the legend. All the other stuff is standard GT500, so you get powerful A/C, power seats, windows, mirrors, and locks, a tilt wheel, and a full-function entertainment system with a big screen in the center of the dash. And it goes without saying that everything works like it should. And while Mustangs aren't famous for their trunk space, this Shelby has a decently-sized cargo bay big enough for your gear on a long road trip.
Yes, you read that correctly up above, this Shelby is packing close to 650 horsepower, a whopping 150 more than a stock GT500. That was done largely with an upgraded supercharger that's been ported and honed and fitted with a smaller pulley to make more boost. Supporting that blower is a K&N cold air intake, a set of long-tube headers, high-flow catalytic converters, and that wicked-sounding side exhaust. S and R Performance put a tune on it so that it starts and idles like a stocker and is very user-friendly on the street. To handle all that extra power, the suspension was beefed up with a full adjustable coil-over suspension with a tubular K-member and lower A-arms, plus an oversized front sway bar. Out back, there's a set of lowering springs and an adjustable Panhard rod that controls the rear axle. The GT500's Brembo brakes were already awesome, so they didn't need an upgrade, and on a Mustang, few wheels are more attractive than the hoops on this Shelby, which wear low-profile 20-inch rubber.
