Advertised as the "One For `41", the P12 Special Deluxe was
Plymouth's premier product in 1941 and enjoyed great success due to
the solid reputation of its marque. Plymouth in those days
maintained a conservative attitude toward styling and engineering,
concentrating instead on offering solid value for the money. For
much of its life, Plymouth was one of the top-selling American
automobile brands; Plymouth, Chevrolet and Ford were commonly
referred to as the "low-priced three" marques in the American
market. Through 1956, Plymouth vehicles were known for their
durability, affordability and engineering.
The Special Deluxe came in two- or four-door sedans, business
coupes, auxiliary seat coupes, convertible coupes with full rear,
station wagons and two long-wheelbase sedans, in seven-passenger
and limousine form.
The 1941 Plymouth was an improved 1940 model. The styling was
nicely updated with an almost heart-shaped grille and "speedline"
fenders with modest bright embellishment. 1941 marked the first use
of stainless-steel fender beading bumper end 'wingtips' and center
Superguards, which helped alleviate the possibility of the guard
interfering with the opening and closing of the deck lid. A front
opening, alligator-type hood replaced the butterfly type of years
past and at long last the battery was moved underneath the hood
from its position under the driver's seat. To justify slightly
higher prices than Ford and Chevy, Plymouth rode a slightly longer
117-inch wheelbase.
This is truly the best Plymouth we have seen. Just this year, the
car was thoroughly checked and some issues were found because the
car had been idle. A brand new top (and hydraulics) has been
installed as the old one had wrinkled. A rebuilt master cylinder
and new brake cylinders and lines were also installed. The original
carburetor has been rebuilt and reinstalled with new lines. The
radio and all gauges work well. This is a must see, and would be a
wonderful addition to any collection. This is an expensive Mopar,
but no doubt the best on the planet.
A GREAT STORY ON A GREAT CAR!!
Just about a year ago, I got a call from a gentleman telling me he
had seen this wonderful Plymouth (41 Plymouth Special Deluxe
Convertible) on our website.
His Mom and Dad took a similar car on their honeymoon and were
celebrating their 70th anniversary. We discussed this car and he
wanted to see it. The car was perfect and exactly what he was
looking for. He purchased the car for his parents’ anniversary
party. The parents were so excited to see the car at the party.
Pictures of the children and grandchildren were taken with the car.
Champagne was poured and it was a great party.
Now at 90 years old, Dad really does not have a use for the car,
but will always have those memories. The car is now for sale AGAIN,
and waiting for another happy owner to take it home. It is still
ready to show or drive to that favorite family outing.
