As the automotive world celebrates Mustang’s 50th anniversary this year, we are pleased to offer this superbly restored and authentic 1966 Mustang “K-code” Coupe—“K” being the VIN engine code designation for the car’s rare and desirable 271-hp (4.7L) High Performance 289-cid V-8.
This truly remarkable Mustang is factory-equipped with option packages that make it an all-in-one sports car, luxury car and performance car. It was restored by CK Auto Restoration to their extremely high standards of excellence. The well-documented car was completely deconstructed before it was renewed by the shop in every detail, from top to bottom and inside out. Completed in 2007, the extraordinarily meticulous restoration resulted in what has to be one of the finest restored first generation Mustangs out there.
This red 1966 Mustang GT is one of only 5,469 Mustangs equipped with the 271-hp High-Performance 289 V-8 engine during the 1966 model run (total per Marti Auto Works research). It was built in the autumn of 1965 and the original window sticker reveals the car was shipped from the factory to a Ford dealer in Hudson, Ohio. The red Coupe was titled to its first owner on November 29, 1965.
Introduced late in the 1963 model year as an option in the compact Ford Fairlane, the powerful 271-hp High-Performance (“Hi-Po”) engine was added to the Mustang option chart in June 1964—two months after the pony car’s introduction. From that point through the end of 1966, the Hi-Po engine would be the most potent factory powerplant available in a Mustang.
Ford engineers equipped the high-performance K-code 289 V-8 with solid lifters and topped it with a performance-calibrated Autolite 4-bbl. carburetor with manual choke. They also beefed up the engine’s internals to withstand the increased stresses that were sure to be encountered. Ford said of the K-code engine, “...this powerful V-8 provides sports car performance to match Mustang’s sports car styling.” Weighing only 465 lbs., the potent Ford small-block V-8 provided impressive acceleration and speed without adversely impacting handling.
The Coupe has the factory-spec rugged 4-speed “Toploader” manual gearbox and 9-inch Ford differential that contributed to the Hi-Po engine’s performance capability. Ordering the engine in a Mustang required a special handling package that included heavy-duty suspension components and a quicker than standard steering ratio. Ford included the dual-red-stripe 6.95 x 14 tires seen on this car with the Hi-Po engine.
Introduced in 1965, the Mustang GT Equipment package included white GT lower body stripes, GT ornamentation, and a special grille bar with fog lights. The GT’s dual exhausts are routed through the rear valance panel and tipped with bright extensions. Front disc brakes were also part of the GT package. The Mustang’s original window sticker lists its GT Equipment group and chromed styled steel wheels as separate options.
Resplendent in red inside and out, the Mustang is a “65-B” Coupe, which tells us it was built with the factory deluxe “pony” interior with its embossed vinyl trim. The deluxe interior décor included the wood-grain steering wheel and instrument panel appliques seen in the car. The Coupe’s full-length console was an additional option. It also has the optional Rally-Pac, which added the clock and tachometer (the car has the correct 8,000 rpm unit for the Hi-Po engine).
With its especially striking color combination and authentic high-performance V-8 powertrain, this wonderfully restored “K-code” GT Luxury Coupe is sure to be a prized addition to any collection—be it the only Mustang in the stable, or one of many.
