"If the Porsche 914 is underrated, it's only because it's compared
to arguably the greatest car in automotive history - the Porsche
911. The 914 was different and it still is different. I was just at
Luftgekhlt in Los Angeles, the event dedicated to air cooled
Porsche. There were hundreds of beautiful classic 911 cars, but I
was one of a handful of 914 owners there. What I love about my car
is that it has the style sensibilities that Porsche is famous for,
but there's something charmingly different about the way it does
it." Quoting an owner on Porsche.com
For consignment, a 1973 Porsche 914 Targa with a title verified
59,551 actual miles. In the past five months, this example received
a new battery, targa top, trunk carpet, oil pressure switch and the
paint was corrected, clay barred and polished. Around 2016, it
received a complete engine rebuild by a certified Porsche mechanic
as well as new exhaust, clutch, brake work, and seals. Since 2014
it's been stored in a climate controlled environment.
Exterior
Its diminutive size is made bolder by the Saturn Yellow paint that
figuratively sets this car ablaze with vibrant color. The
Appearance Group option means this example gets chrome bumpers and
fog lights on the outside. One of the more distinct features of a
car with many is the flat targa roof between the A-pillar and the
black vinyl sail panels which create buttress-like extensions that
become a cove around the vertical rear window. The tail lights are
not a borrowed component, rather specifically designed for the
narrow rear panel and wrap around profile while upfront, pop up
headlight doors are flanked by amber marker lights that cap the
front fenders. 15-inch Mahle alloy wheels carry 195/65R15 tires
with a mid 2017 date code. Overall, the body, paint and trim are in
nice shape with minor imperfections that include some surface rust
above the rocker and some minor chips and inclusions.
Interior
Textured black vinyl covers the inner doors with asymmetrical pulls
that puts a combo pull/storage bin on the driver's side and a more
traditional piece on the passengers and both are in nice condition.
Smooth black side collect textured vinyl inserts on the bucket
seats that flank a low arm rest. Up front, the distinctive black
leather wrapped steering wheel fronts a sporty instrument cluster
that puts the tachometer in the center, all well within the
driver's viewshed. Integrated into the center dash are the fan
levers and AM/FM radio backed by strips of textured vinyl adhering
to the surface. A center stack waterfalls toward the shifter as
part of the Appearance Group and is home to a clock, temp gauge,
and voltmeter while the shifter itself is simple and clean. Loop
style black carpet covers the floor and both the front and rear
cargo areas, all of which present cleanly. The Appearance group
also adds a dual horn.
Drivetrain
Under the Porsche emblazoned mid mounted grille is a 2.0 liter flat
4 cylinder with a one barrel carburetor and 69 horsepower. It's
mated to a 5-speed manual transmission keeping power in back
through 4.429 gears. The engine itself presents cleanly in this
compact compartment.
Undercarriage
Things look good here as well, with some typical patina and surface
rust and a bit of light mud. For components beyond the belly pans,
you'll find dual exhaust routed to a stock style exhaust and
emerging through a single tip in back. Disc brakes are on all four
wheels and suspension is independent front and rear.
Drive-ability
Once in, we're close to the ground in what feels like a very secure
go kart, both in seating posture and road feel as this one exhibits
great handling, crisp shifting, and braking that's on point. Open
up the throttle, and the engine occasionally bogs. Beyond that, all
the functional items work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
