2003 Ford Mustang GT Centennial Edition Convertible
"2003 was a big year for Ford - it had been exactly 100 years since
the company's founding. To celebrate, special Centennial editions
were created for many of its most popular and iconic models.
Hitting showrooms in the spring of 2003, the Centennial Edition
Mustang featured a number of exterior and interior upgrades. The
Centennial Edition was available only in black, hearkening back to
Henry Ford's famous quote about the Model T - 'a customer can have
a car painted any color that he wants, so long as it is black.' It
was based on the 2003 GT, which featured a 4.6L V8 built off Ford's
Modular engine platform."
For consignment, a 2003 Ford Mustang GT Centennial convertible
showing 34,201 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA
title exemption. Ford planned to build 3,000 of the special
edition, but ended at 2,040 with 1,323 of those being convertibles.
This one has some go fast modifications.
Exterior
Sure, it looks like your standard '03 GT, but get up close and
check out the badges on the front fenders and the decklid which
make it clear this is one of the special editions with a 100 behind
vintage Ford Motor Company script. All the GT's bells and whistles
are here; a hood scoop, rear quarter ducts, and a wing over the
back where the Mustang is embossed into the bumper cover and all of
it is inky black. The soft top is black too and its window is clear
and top up or top down, the 17-inch Bullitt wheels look great on
the car and are wrapped in 45 series ZR rated tires, all while
allowing red front calipers to shine through! Imperfections include
surface scratches, peeling clear and spider cracks on the hood,
chips, inclusions, scratches, and scrapes on the chin spoiler.
Interior
Here you get the exclusive two tone Parchment interior, beginning
on the door panels where the switchgear faceplate becomes the
darker color and both doors are clean. On the bucket seats and 2+2
rear, you get dark parchment tuck and roll inserts framed in a
medium shade and while there's wear on the driver's seat, the rest
are in great condition. The steering wheel joins the two tone party
with a dark upper and lower arch and an added boost gauge has been
integrated on the column, but more on that in the next section! The
standard instrument cluster is well designed within the dashboard
cove and the center stack stands out with an aluminum colored
faceplate where you'll find the A/C knobs, AM/FM/CD radio and
diamond patterned rubber knob on a stout shifter. Tan carpet covers
the floor with matching mats and the trunk is finished in gray
panels ready to accept your bags.
Drivetrain
Things get more interesting here with the 4.6 liter SOHC V8 topped
by a Saleen Series IV supercharger and a 90mm Lightning MAF. An SVT
Focus fuel pump supplies the juice to 42 pound injectors, also from
a Lightning. It's mated to a Tremec 3650 5-speed manual
transmission that routes power to the Ford 8.8" rear with 3.27
gears and TracLoc.
Undercarriage
We're met with clean, driver quality conditions underneath where
the dual exhaust run through an X-pipe, then FlowMaster mufflers,
finally exiting via chrome tips out back. Power disc brakes are on
all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs front and
rear with a 4 link in the back.
Drive-Ability
She sounds great on startup and gallops around the test loop like a
wild...um...Mustang, with a bit of Lightning under the hood! This
horse does not whiney, it whines! Really no complaints here as the
car does everything well and functions at 100%. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
So let's summarize; here you have a limited special edition with a
unique interior and an added supercharger under the hood. At a stop
light, you'll be disregarded as a normal GT, but you can explain
yourself when they catch up at the next light. According to our
consignor, this car received a custom SCT dyno tune and while there
are no horsepower figures listed, stock Lightnings were putting out
about 390 at the time and GTs were putting down 260. So, maybe
somewhere in between?
