"Automobiles change. Standards do not. Only one car has endured as
the standard of measure for luxury sedans while Mercedes have
become futuristic, BMWs have grown soft, and Rolls-Royces have been
downsized: the Jaguar XJ6 is still the Jaguar XJ6. It is that
rarest of modern automotive quantities as classic, and you can pin
down exactly what makes it so. When people order leather interiors
for their new cars, they have an image of the Jaguar XJ6 in their
minds. But nowhere except in the real thing does this image fully
come to life." Car and Driver, December 1985
For consignment, a 1986 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas 4 door saloon
showing 103,516 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA
title exemption. Vanden Plas indicates an upgraded trim package
that includes Connolly leather, walnut trim, sound deadening, and
some extra exterior trim.
Exterior
Let's begin at the beginning as the Jaguar comes your way with a
classic four headlight fascia, elegant grille, and of course, the
leaping jaguar hood ornament, jaws agape. The Americanized bumper
extends the black rubber a bit but there's remnant chrome there
too, picking up on all the front metalwork. In profile, the narrow
bodied car is sleek, yes, like a cat with handsome proportions and
a distinct shape that retains a long hood and long decklid without
sacrificing door and window dimensions. Our example wears two stage
Antelope Metallic and along with the design bends and lines of the
car, side molding and a dark pinstripe run parallel down the side.
In back, flush tail lights cup the corners of rear panel and that's
where the Vanden Plas scripted badge is found. In true 80's
fashion, a pigtail car phone antenna is perched on the curved rear
window and if you needed a phone in your car back then, you are
probably important! Imperfections include some peeling clear on the
wheels, a few inclusions and bubbles in the paint often where it
meets trim, chips, scratches, a ding in the rocker panel, light
rust on a door corner, and a dent in the front apron.
Interior
Simple, handsome, and tight materials cling to the doors combining
leather, burlwood and chrome that invites you in. Once there,
you'll be surrounded by Doeskin leather on the robust bucket seats
in front equally as luxurious rear 2+2. We note some wear and
discoloration on the front seats but the rears are near pristine.
The entire front is paneled is burlwood to the point it's a place
you don't want to leave. The grain of the wood is the perfect
complement to the black features to include the steering wheel,
gauge and instruments, vents, trip computer, AM/FM/Cassette radio
and yes...and old school cell phone, all in great condition. Low
pile gray carpet is protected by deep carpeted mats while the tan
headliner above shows some sag and disconnection. The finished
trunk is nearly a perfect box shaped space, roomy and clean.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, or bonnet as they say, is a 4.2 liter DOHC inline
six cylinder, fuel injected and putting out 176 horsepower. It is
backed by a BW66 3-speed automatic transmission that sends power to
the rear axle with 2.88 gears. Even with an inline six, the bay is
a crowded place, here presented in driver quality condition.
Undercarriage
Driver quality here as well with typical patina and surface rust,
but a solid and dry structure is found. Power disc brakes are at
both ends and so too are coil springs on the fully independent
suspension. A single exhaust quickly splits into two and runs
through the original mufflers and resonators before finding an exit
dressed by a rear apron around the tips.
Drive-Ability
It's smooth sailing in the British flagship but we are on very old
tires from 1994, so handle the car with care as we do a lap.
Comfortable is understating the experience and functionality is on
par with a fresh car with the exception of the A/C and the driver's
power mirror, both of which don't work. Everything else does! While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Forty years old and it hasn't lost one bit of class and allure.
Forty years from now, this will still be a well appointed,
handsome, and comfortable car. You can't say that about many!
