"For the competitors, this SC400 coupe amounts to piling on. It's a
power play. The coupe is not held back by a need to share parts
with the sedan. The coupe is built to do what a coupe should do: be
stylish to the eye, be energetic to the touch, be impressive to the
Sharper Image set. This amounts to the creation of a new car, and
few carmakers are serious enough about the coupe business to go to
all that trouble." Car and Driver, June 1991
For consignment, a 1993 Lexus SC400 coupe with a title verified
56,410 actual miles. Impressed immediately with the paint, we learn
from the consignor that this one has had a 2-stage paint correction
and 3-year ceramic coating applied. That explains the fathom deep
paint.
Exterior
It is Midnight Indigo Pearl that flows over the graceful lines of
the sport coupe accented with a few polished Lexus "L's," a logo
still relatively fresh to American as the brand was introduced in
1989. They present just enough jewelry when coupled with the brand
name and model number on the rear deck accompanied by bold,
horizontal tail lights and twin chrome exhaust tips. Clear lenses
up front on all lights keep things elegant and front a long nose
leading to a sweeping windshield. This is a solid roof example with
no sunroof, but it does have a low profile spoiler out, adding some
balance to the stunted hind quarters and the lengthy front. 16-inch
multi spoke wheels carry 255/55R16 tires for a solid, square
stance, helping the car retain its low profile, um, profile! There
are a few inclusions in the paint, a number of chips, a scuff or
two, and some light chin scrapes. But walk up to the car like a
normal person and you likely won't notice these things unless
you're looking.
Interior
Opening the doors reveal a wider than average opening and it was
designed that way. Those doors are draped in Ivory leather and
burlwood trim taking in the black handle, and both doors present
well. Tan leather bucket seats offer a comfortable and adequately
padded perch for you to drive for hours of fatigue-free enjoyment
and other than some light patina creasing on the driver's all
seats, including the well proportioned rear 2+2, are in great
condition. A taupe steering wheel matches the trim of the center
stack as well as the straight shifter, here based in charcoal
plastic. The backlit gauges are a hybrid digital and analog
arrangement relaying clear and basic information. Components in the
center stack are all tactile and pushbutton to include the
AM/FM/Cassette radio with CD changer and the A/C panel with digital
readouts. Plush tan carpet is below, wood accenting runs the width
of the dash, and the headliner is in perfect condition. Thick gray
carpet finishes the trunk which presents cleanly and carries the CD
changer. Lexus does interiors right and their early cars set the
trend.
Drivetrain
The SC400 houses a 250 horsepower 4.0 Liter DOHC V8. It's mated to
an A340E 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the
rear axle with 3.916 gears. The crowded engine bay presents
cleanly.
Undercarriage
Clean, dry and rust free is how we find the underside where dual
exhaust travels through original equipment including mufflers and
resonators. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and the fully
independent suspension includes Macpherson struts front and
back.
Drive-Ability
The SC provided a smooth ride, as expected with responsive
steering, nice handling, and plenty of power underfoot. Also
expected was the performance of the functional items which scored
100 on our checklist. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Thirty years later, this car still looks good, drives good, and is
comfortable as you'd expect from Lexus. Toyota, the mothership, was
the top rated manufacturer in 1993 and they can thank their Lexus
line for some of that. They're still in the top 10 of course and
have been ever since! Here's a well preserved, rarely seen SC400
that will be a turnkey purchase for the lucky new owner.
