"DeLorean Motor Company, (DeLorean), was an American automobile
brand started by a former top GM executive, John Z DeLorean, in
1975. DeLorean cars were known for the futuristic looking linear
design, hard edges, wedge shape and unpainted body panels made from
brushed stainless steel sheets. The prototype work started in the
early 1970's and the body with its gullwing doors was designed by
Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ital Design and was finished in August 1975."

For consignment, a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 with a title verified
11,727 actual miles. This garage kept example is all original
according to our consignor with the exception of the radio.
Obviously, the impact of Back to the Future has made these cars
collectible is a way that goes beyond their original
uniqueness.
Exterior
There wasn't anything like it in 1981, and there's nothing like it
today as the design is entirely unique and recognizable and if not
for Cyber Trucks, the answer to the question, 'name the only
production vehicle to be produced with stainless steel panels?' The
headlights take on a narrow profile captured within the fascia that
includes a slim grille and large chin spoiler. Side windows are
mostly fixed and also retain the car's aerodynamic goals, while
large triangular side windows improve interior light and
visibility, following the descending angle of the tail section. The
tail lights were futuristic at the time with sections of color
delineated by black borders while wide louvers cover the rear
window and added to the spacecraft, (pre-movie), rear attitude.
14-inch front turbine wheels combine with the 15-inch in back,
along with staggered size tires that are 3" higher in back while
maintaining a stance parallel with the ground. The only
imperfections we find are a tiny scratch on the stainless steel and
some surface scuffs on a bumper corner.
Interior
The elephant in the room are the gullwing doors which open high and
reveal an ingress port that is so wide, the entire cabin is
exposed. The doors themselves are nicely appointed with padded gray
leather and of course, a pull strap for closing the door from the
inside. Gray leather bucket seats look space age for the time and
present in very nice condition. Behind them, a carpeted storage
area and net to keep your cargo in place. A clean black steering
wheel fronts a large pod containing the gauges and indicator
lights, simple, clean and concise. Padded and gathered leather
abounds and surrounds the center stack where you'll find an
AM/FM/Cassette radio over standard A/C knobs and then the unique
DMC shifter at your side, based in clean plastic faceplates over
nice gray carpet. A front trunk is lined with black carpet and
remains spotless while a grated metal panel covers the engine under
the rear hatch.
Drivetrain
In back, you'll find a 2.8 liter V6, fuel injected through a Bosch
K-tronic system and rated at 130 horsepower, enough to get you back
to 1985, apparently. It's mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission
that keeps power in back, routed through 3.44 gears. Power brakes
and air conditioning are supplied and the bay presents in clean
condition.
Undercarriage
Aerodynamic belly pans take up much of the underside real estate
where conditions are clean, driver quality. The dual exhaust runs
through original equipment and a muffler that emits two tips tucked
into the rear valance. Four wheel power disc brakes are on hand and
suspension is fully independent with coil springs in front and
Macpherson struts in back.
Drive-Ability
Hang on, Marty, we're heading to the test loop without a clock
tower in sight! This low mileage example is not the fastest car on
the road, but it may be one of the most unique. It operates as it
should but we're not breaking through any time portals as we're on
29 year old tires. Ironically, it's time to take this one back to
the mall, just like in the movie! While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
We tried not to make movie jokes or references and of course,
failed. You can't help it and that's how ingrained the movie car is
and how strong the association is. But buy this car for the piece
of American automotive history that it is and would remain with or
without Hollywood. Only 8,583 DeLoreans were produced and active
enthusiast groups exist all over the world.
