"Chevrolet trucks are America's favorite trucks. Last year's
official registration figures show that Chevrolet trucks were
preferred over the next two makes combined; the truck buyer's first
choice in each and every one of the forty eight states. That's very
convincing proof, don't you agree, that Chevrolet trucks do a
better job and offer more value. And that's a very good reason for
looking over the new Advance-Design trucks now at your Chevrolet
dealers. You'll find a model to meet your needs, whatever your
business may be." From a 1950 print ad.
For consignment, a 1950 Chevrolet 3600 Series pickup truck showing
103 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. Here we have an S10 chassis, a Mercedes turbo diesel,
and an NV3500 transmission, coming together on a slick truck with a
unique configuration.
Exterior
Satin Black covers the truck in single stage paint which is silky
smooth and sinister all at the same time! The grille is black and
any semblance of metal elements visually pop here including the
badges, door handles, tailgate chains, and red painted 15-inch
wheels with polished hubcaps and beauty rings. The fixed rear
window overlooks a bed covered in a gray painted, channeled board.
Halo projector headlights give the car a modern flair while
outboard tail lights are small, cone shaped affairs perched on the
top side of the tailgate frame. The truck hunkers low over the
wheels and presents very nicely with minimal imperfections limited
to scratches and rough surface on the front bumper.
Interior
Red inserts color the black steel doors, simple and clean. Inside,
gray cloth covers the bench seat and also exhibits excellent
condition. The wood rimmed 3 spoke steering wheel and two gauge
dash present just as they did in 1950 but of course, the gauges
have been upgraded, embedded within the satin black dash. The
stamped Chevrolet in the dash is painted red over an AM/FM/CD radio
suspended underneath, just behind the floor mounted shifter. Knit
style charcoal carpet covers the floor and the squared transmission
tunnel and a smooth, sectional vinyl headliner finishes the roof
with carpet matching visors.
Drivetrain
And now for something completely different. Here's a Mercedes-Benz
3.0 liter turbo diesel inline five cylinder, fuel injected and
rated at 123 horsepower. It's mated to an NV3500 5-speed
transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Power
brakes and power steering are on board and the truck runs on a 12
volt system. The bay presents in clean driver quality
condition.
Undercarriage
Clean and dry conditions prevail underneath where uniform black is
the dominant color on this more modern chassis with the plywood bed
floor shining through. The single exhaust has no muffler and exits
just right of center out back. Power disc brakes are in front and
power drums in back and suspension is standard S10 with coil
springs ahead and leaf springs behind.
Drive-Ability
The airy and clean cabin is a fine place to start our short journey
around the test loop where this uniquely configured classic runs,
drives, handles, and stops well. Other than the horn, all functions
on this nice build operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If you're gonna roll coal, you might as well have a coal colored
truck! And that's what we have here; the complete package. A ton
show truck that is rocking a turbo diesel. Wait until the guys at
the show get a look at this one! An usual recipe that dishes out a
great truck!
