Blinkers If the Ford Model T was the car that put America on the
road, the Model A was the car that made driving on that road a
nicer experience. Debuting in late 1927 as a 1928 model year, the
Model A offered a nicely styled body, four colors and a top speed
of around 65 mph. This 1928 Model A Phaeton 4-door Convertible is a
beautiful first-year example of the famed model, benefiting from an
older, high quality restoration. Finished in Niagara Blue with
contrasting black fenders and running boards, this Model A Phaeton
was repainted about 20 years ago in what is believed to be its
original color scheme, and remains in excellent condition
throughout. The classic shape is most commonly seen on hot rods
these days, but finding one restored to how it would have looked
originally, makes you realize what a great design it was. With its
polished grille bumpers and spare tire cover, to the black painted
wire wheels with wide white walls, this Model A is an attractive
open-top vehicle. On the interior, brown leather covers the front
and rear seats and door cards. In front of the driver sits a 4
spoke steering wheel and a shifter for the 3-speed manual and
Mitchell hi/lo gear splitter. Unlike the Model T, these Model As
were the first to adopt a more conventional control layout with the
gas, brake and clutch pedals you would expect. Powering the Model A
is the famously stout 200ci "L-Head" inline-4 that produces 40
horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque - the Model A is hardly fast,
but it was built to reliably move people and cargo long distances.
Power is then sent through a 3-speed manual transmission with a
mitchell hi/lo gear splitter and a 3.77 rear end that essentially
gives the car 6 forward gears. 4 wheel drum brakes slow the car
down and the vehicle received upgraded wiring including an
alternator conversion, but retains its 6-volt power. In just over
one year of production, Ford sold over a million Model As, and by
the time it went out of production in 1932, nearly 5 million had
been built. This nicely kept standard example is emblematic of the
car so many people were driving nearly one hundred years ago, and
will be a great attention getting classic everywhere you go . *- -*
