"In 1967 an Alfa Romeo played a starring role in the movie, The
Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman. To honor this appearance, Alfa
Romeo introduced the Spider Graduate in 1985, which would remain in
production until 1990. The Alfa Romeo Graduate was an 'entry level'
vehicle that was built to similar specifications to the QV and SV,
sharing the same transmission and engine." Conceptcarz.com
For consignment, a 1987 Alfa Romeo Graduate Spider showing 54,379
miles, but the true miles are unknown. Over its production years,
only about 8,000 Alfa Romeo Graduates were imported to the United
States with likely less than 1,000 allocated for the U.S. in
1987.
Exterior
The newer paint on this Italian sports car is none other than Alfa
Red, arguably one of the best colors for the model, equipped of
course with the now iconic rubber spoiler that integrated as part
of the rear fascia. Despite the U.S. mandate for bumpers, Alfa does
a decent job of integrating the bolstered units here allowing the
profile to retain nice balance. The straight beltline starts at the
recessed headlights while a character line runs parallel from the
back of the front wheel to the tail. The long overhang contributes
to the car's signature profile and the center offset exhaust is
pure Italian. A black canvas top and black side mirrors add a touch
of contrast while 14-inch wheels are of a simple design.
Imperfections register as some inclusions in the paint, a rock chip
in the windshield, and scuffs on the rubber bumpers. Overall, the
body, paint and trim are in very good condition.
Interior
As the base model, vinyl was introduced into the interior, here in
beige, with some age and a tear on the driver's side and the
passenger side remaining in nice condition. The beige bucket seats
are robust and show a bit of age as well and again, the driver's
side fairs worse with some tears. The sport steering wheel fronts a
large gauge pod with six instruments and a number of indicator
lights behind Plexiglas. In the center stack, ample round vents
live up top and an aftermarket AM/FM/CD radio lives above the
notably vertical shifter that rises over a center console storage
bin and E-brake. Tan carpet covers the floor and package shelf in
back, showing some staining and discoloration and the finished
trunk, in black, also shows use.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions are found when you lift the back of the
hood forward, revealing the 2.0 liter DOHC inline four cylinder,
fuel injected via a Bosch L-Jetronic system, resulting in 115
horsepower. In true sports car fashion, power is routed to the rear
axle with 4.11 gears. Power brakes are supplied.
Undercarriage
Driver quality here as well with typical aging, some oil under the
engine, and some overspray in back. Power disc brakes are at all
four wheels and the fully independent suspension consists of coil
springs front and rear with trailing arms in back. A single exhaust
flows through a stock style muffler before exiting out back through
a straight pipe.
Drive-Ability
These are comfortable cars and the ergonomics are good despite the
unconventional shifter position; it takes about 30 seconds to adapt
to it! Meanwhile, we're on 34 year old tires so we baby this
bambino around the test loop where all functions perform as
intended, with the exception of the oil pressure gauge. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Oh sure, you'll get the Benjamin Braddock and Mrs. Robinson jokes,
but you'll have the last laugh in the end because you'll still be
driving a great little Italian roadster that turns heads and offers
a spirited ride that will make the 115 horsepower feel like 230.
Top down fun awaits and you don't have to travel to the Amalfi
coast to make it happen!
