"The 1971 Oldsmobile 442 was a muscle car produced by the
Oldsmobile division of General Motors. The 4-4-2 nomenclature stood
for a four barrel carburetor, four speed manual transmission, and
two exhausts. Based on its combination of four barrel carburetor,
four speed manual transmission, and two exhausts. Only 110 W30
models were built in 1971 which included the fiberglass force
induction hood and turbo 400 transmission. Due to strict emissions
regulations, GM killed off all the big block cars and the 1971 442
was the last Oldsmobile muscle car." Supercars.net
For consignment, a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass S 442 W30 tribute
showing 381 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. This car started life as a Cutlass S Holiday Coupe and
received a frame off restoration and always maintained in a climate
controlled garage.
Exterior
There will be no missing the arrival of this car to the car show,
draped in Flame Orange that simply lights up the road! Of course,
it wouldn't be a 4-4-2 W30 tribute without some stripes and they
are here in white, over the double hood scoops and along the rocker
with continual coverage over the wheel openings. What other
features sets this apart from your uncle's commuter coupe? Hood
pins with twist locks, 442 emblems on all four sides, a rear wing,
and 14-inch Magnum 500 wheels. The W30 callout lives on that white
rocker stipe while Hurst Equipped gets the nod on the decklid. Dual
trumpeted exhaust tips live in dedicated cut outs on the chrome
bumper which also takes in the stacked tail lights. The body, paint
and trim are spectacular with imperfections noted as some bubbling
on the surface in various places including the solid roof, a scuff
on the bumper, and some surface rust on the bottom edge of the
doors.
Interior
Door panels are handsomely dressed in button adorned black vinyl,
black carpet and a woodgrain insert framed in shiny trim and both
doors are immaculate. The button treatment covers the vinyl buckets
as well with double stitched accenting and along with the rear
seats, present cleanly. X-spokes on a black rimmed steering wheel
front the fresh looking dashboard, faced in wood grain and housing
three perfect circles. The black mid panel takes in the vent
controls, AM radio, and coveted 442 call out. A Hurst shifter rises
from the floor amongst the black twist carpet while shoulder belts
take their place on the headliner which shows minimal creasing and
is fully intact. The clean parade continues to the trunk where a
spotless floor is dressed with a vinyl mat.
Drivetrain
It's not a 455, but it is Metallic Blue highlighting the gleaming
engine bay. Here we have a period correct 350ci with a 4-barrel
carburetor, mated to a Saginaw 4-speed manual transmission routing
power to the 12 bolt rear axle. Power brakes and power steering are
supplied and yes, we have red inner fenders!
Undercarriage
No complaints here; all clean and dry. Dual exhaust runs through
stock style mufflers before exiting like a pair of trumpets in
back. Power brakes are here as front disc and rear drum and
suspension includes coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in
the back.
Drive-Ability
A notably guttural exhaust fills the room like a well tuned brass
section and we row the Oldsmobile onto the test loop where the
engine proves to run well. The car tracks straight and all
functions within it operate as they should. We do note some clutch
chatter as the only demerit on our checklist. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
With only 110 real '71 W30's out there in the world, owning one
would be cost prohibitive for most of us. Here's a faithful tribute
in beautiful condition that's not only going to turn some heads,
but likely fool a few people at first glance. Nice tributes sell
consistently here at the mall and this one is likely to find a new
home in short order. Is your garage ready?
