Gateway Classic Cars of San Antonio/Austin is proud to present this
1951 Ford F1, finished in a custom two-tone Purple and Black
exterior over a Red and Black interior. This extensively modified
pickup combines Ford's recognizable first-generation F-Series
styling with a chopped roof, big-block Chevrolet power, custom
suspension, and numerous street rod components throughout.
Under the hood is a GM 502 CID V8 equipped with dual Edelbrock 8867
600 CFM carburetors featuring progressive linkage and a K&N air
filter. Additional engine components include Mallory ignition,
custom PHAT 51 valve covers, and a Walker radiator with an electric
cooling fan. Sanderson headers are paired with electric exhaust
cutouts, while a custom louvered hood and firewall contribute to
the truck's modified engine compartment.
The 502 V8 is paired with a B&M Street/Strip TH400 automatic
transmission featuring a chrome case. Power is transferred to a
Ford 9-inch rear end equipped with 4.11 gears. A custom
quick-change-style rear cover adds another distinctive detail to
the drivetrain. Lokar components include the transmission shifter,
accelerator pedal, brake pedal, parking brake handle, engine oil
dipstick, and transmission fluid dipstick.
The chassis has received substantial modifications, including a
Mustang II-style front suspension with power rack-and-pinion
steering and front disc brakes. At the rear, a four-link suspension
with coilover shocks is paired with Wilwood disc brakes. This
combination replaces much of the original F1 suspension and braking
arrangement with components commonly associated with custom street
rod builds.
One of the most recognizable modifications is the four-inch roof
chop, which changes the proportions of the original F1 cab. The
exterior features a custom two-tone finish consisting of Ford Deep
Iris paint code 6709 and PPG Black incorporating PPG PLL90 Sunset
Red Pearl. Additional body modifications include shaved door
handles, a custom louvered hood, and a modified firewall.
The pickup bed has also received considerable attention, featuring
custom wheel tubs, a custom wood floor, and a matching bed cover.
The truck rides on front tires measuring 205/70R14, while the rear
features substantially wider Hoosier tires measuring 31x18.5R15,
complementing the modified rear suspension and tubbed bed.
Inside, the custom Red and Black interior incorporates Ford V8
logos and a redesigned dashboard fitted with Dakota Digital
instrumentation. An Ididit tilt steering column and Lokar controls
add to the custom equipment. Vintage Air air conditioning provides
climate control, while power windows add convenience. The cabin
also features Dynamat sound insulation and a Ron Francis custom
wiring harness.
Additional equipment includes an AM/FM radio, battery disconnect
switch, and battery trickle charger. The truck is also equipped
with a nitrous oxide (NOS) system, with the components and plumbing
installed, although the system is not currently connected for
operation.
The 1951 model year was part of Ford's first-generation F-Series
lineup, originally introduced in 1948. The F1 served as the
half-ton pickup in Ford's newly developed truck family. This
particular example retains the recognizable early F-Series body
design while incorporating extensive modifications to its engine,
transmission, chassis, suspension, exterior, and interior.
