"If a pickup is your kind of truck, you really need to consider
Chevrolet for 1966. Why? Well, consider model choice first.
Chevrolet offers 18 different models, including four all new El
Caminos. Then consider engines. Standard power in all models is a
more muscular 250 cubic inch Six, although you may specify a 292
cubic inch Six or choose from several V8's. These Chevies,
(sic),are built to last!" Excerpted from the 1966 truck sales
brochure.
For consignment, a 1966 Chevrolet C10 short bed pickup showing
70,291 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a faulty
odometer. Here's a great looking truck with some nice boxes
checked; a 350ci V8 under the hood, Cragar wheels, and power disc
brakes up front.
Exterior
Single stage Sunset Orange Metallic coats this ton truck,
accented by the contrasting gray paint of the cab, echoed in the
embossed lettering on the tailgate. A bold spear traverses the
entire side of the truck itself augmented by a thinner trim piece
that runs parallel from the door back. A clever bit of design is
captured up front where the marker lights are embedded on the front
edge of the hood along with wide intake gaps, making the headlights
and grille appear low, all underscored by a robust chrome bumper.
Blue dot tail lights live in back and the bed carries wood planks
in good condition. 15-inch Cragar SS wheels are wrapped in
staggered size tires with 21 years between the production of the
newer fronts and older rears. Imperfections include orange peel
finish throughout, bubbling, cracks, chips, inclusions, dimpling,
filler, paint runs, rust on the bed braces, and off color touch
ups.
Interior
Gray painted doors present cleanly with gleaming hardware, opening
up to a black vinyl bench with red coming through in spots but
fully intact. A hot rod style steering wheel fronts the factory
dashboard with horizontal speedometer and a ribbed panel for knobs
and ignition port. Some modern influence is found in the AM/FM/CD
radio and the added triple gauge below. Clean black carpet covers
the floor and surrounds the tall shifter in a body colored base
plate. A solid rear window is surrounded by gray painted steel
which also colors our ceiling.
Drivetrain
A clean engine bay houses a rebuilt 350ci V8 with an Edelbrock
intake hosting a Holley 4-barrel carburetor in front of a rebuilt
TH350 3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to a 12 bolt
rear axle. Headers, power steering, and power brakes are onboard
and the bay features some polished components for show.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions are found with no surface rust, some residual oil
around, and spray foam added between the cab and bed. The dual
exhaust makes its way thoughPurple Hornies mufflers before exiting
through chrome tips in back. Power brakes are here as front disc
and rear drum and suspension includes coil springs as both ends
with semi trailing arms in back.
Drive-Ability
The 350 comes to life with an impressive exhaust note and we roll
this pickup around the test loop where it provides good power,
straight tracking and decent braking. We note some exhaust leaks as
well as the speedometer and odometer not working. All other
functions on this uncommon truck work as they should. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
In 1966, Chevrolet reached its 10 millionth truck sales milestone
in a year that saw only about 57,000 C10's produced. Despite those
numbers, this is only the 7th '66 to grace our halls. You can't
help but love a classic Chevrolet truck from this era and we'd have
no problem daily driving this one!
