Few postwar Italian automobiles combine engineering sophistication,
elegant styling, and road manners as beautifully as the Lancia
Aurelia B24S Convertible. Introduced in 1956 as the refined
successor to the sporting B24 Spider, the Aurelia Convertible
retained the advanced engineering and effortless performance that
made the Aurelia one of the most respected grand touring cars of
its era while adding improved comfort and practicality. With
graceful coachwork by Pinin Farina and groundbreaking mechanical
design beneath the surface, the B24S remains among the most admired
and collectible Italian sporting automobiles of the 1950s.
At the heart of the Aurelia was one of the most innovative
powerplants of the postwar period. Designed by Francesco de
Virgilio, Lancia's compact aluminum V6 became the world's first
production V6 engine and helped establish the Aurelia's reputation
for refinement and engineering sophistication. In B24S form, the
2.5 liter engine delivered smooth and flexible performance ideally
suited to long distance touring, while the rear mounted transaxle,
De Dion rear suspension, sliding pillar front suspension, and
inboard rear brakes contributed to remarkably balanced handling and
ride quality. Few automobiles of the era combined such advanced
engineering with such understated elegance.
Completed on June 3, 1958, this Aurelia B24S Convertible is one of
just 521 examples produced during the model's brief three year
production run. According to accompanying documentation, chassis
1629 was initially registered in Germany before later relocating to
Italy with its original owner, where it reportedly remained through
the mid-1980s. Following a subsequent change of ownership, the car
underwent refurbishment work in Italy before eventually being
acquired by its previous owner in Belgium in 2016.
Under previous ownership, the Aurelia benefited from a
comprehensive refurbishment carried out by noted Lancia specialists
Epoca Ricambi of Ciney, Belgium. The body was refinished in an
elegant dark gray, complementing the timeless lines of the Pinin
Farina coachwork, while the interior was retrimmed in rich red
leather in accordance with the car's original Pelle Rosso
specification. The presentation today is both sophisticated and
sporting, perfectly suited to the understated elegance for which
Lancia became renowned.
Exterior details include a black convertible top, Carello
headlamps, wraparound chrome bumpers, and proper body color steel
wheels fitted with chrome trim rings and hubcaps. Inside, the
inviting cockpit features beautifully restored leather upholstery,
replacement gray carpeting, Jaeger instrumentation, and a wood rim
steering wheel, all combining to create one of the most tasteful
and refined interiors of the period.
Mechanically, the Aurelia received equal attention during the
refurbishment. The matching engine, number 1749, was reportedly
overhauled along with the four-speed rear mounted transaxle. The
advanced V6 delivers smooth and responsive performance through a
single Weber carburetor, while the rebuilt transaxle and fresh dual
exhaust system contributes to the car's wonderfully balanced and
engaging driving character. True to Lancia tradition, the Aurelia
offers an experience defined not by brute force, but by refinement,
composure, and engineering sophistication.
In September, 2026 the car completed the Colorado Grand, one of
North America's most respected vintage touring events. Its
successful participation in this demanding long-distance rally
further demonstrates the Aurelia's mechanical fitness, reliability,
and exceptional suitability for extended touring.
Accompanying the car is its Lancia Classiche Certificato di Origine
documenting the production date, original colors, and factory
identification numbers, further supporting the authenticity and
history of this rare Aurelia Convertible.
Today, the B24S stands among the most desirable postwar Italian
grand touring cars, admired for its advanced engineering, rarity,
and elegant Pinin Farina styling. Beautifully restored and highly
sophisticated in both appearance and design, this Aurelia B24S
Convertible represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire one of
Lancia's finest and most influential road cars.
