"These are times that try the resources of a nation, times that
call for economy and efficiency from man and machine in order that
those resources may be conserved. Traditionally, Chevrolet ideally
fits today's needs; for Chevrolet, long famous for its economy,
reliability and durability, has developed those qualities to new
heights. Because Chevrolet's balanced engineering has always
provided out standing performance with economy leadership, these
new Chevrolets stand forth as the nation's ideal cars for these
times." From the 1942 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1942 Chevrolet Special Deluxe 2 door Sport Sedan
showing 16,355 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Power doors,
a custom interior, air conditioning and an all steel body is just
the tip of the iceberg for this well done street rod. This example
puts the "Special" in Special Deluxe!
Exterior
The nose forward design is eye-catching but it's the color here
that gets your attention; Light Lilac Metallic over Medium Lilac
Metallic, delineated by third and fourth shades of purple tape
lines. The fenders flare out on this beauty, but the door handles
have been shaved and the roof chopped which streamlines the ride as
it hunkers down on 14 and 15-inch Jegs Sport Star wheels with
staggered size tires. Out back, a landslide of glossy purple paint
is accompanied by diminutive tail lights and airbrushed "Purple
Passion" on the decklid. The Sperm whale shaped hood tops a body
colored grille with lime green call out and includes a row of eight
cleanly cut vents on the side. Imperfections are few and include
some peeling purple tape lines, clear runs, chips, orange peel,
filler dimples, and chipped paint on the grille.
Interior
The clean and wild interior begins with alternating patterns of
purple and white vinyl and cloth on the door panels will billet
hardware and a crisp presentation. Tall white bucket seats are
striped and piped in purple and the rear seats follow suit and all
are clean. A sport steering wheel fronts a, yes, purple painted
dashboard with a row of gold rimmed ivory VDO gauges and vents
along with an AM/FM/CD radio suspended below. Purple cloth covers
the center console which provides two more vents, a pair of
cupholders, and an armrest/storage bin. Thick white carpet wears
purple shag mats and clear rubber mats and the headliner above is
like a sky filled with smooth purple vinyl. A blast of bright
purple is emitted from the trunk which is fully finished in a
carpeted liner.
Drivetrain
Under the hood and trimmed in lavender is a 305ci V8 with a
4-barrel carburetor mated to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission
routing power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Power brakes, power
steering, and air conditioning are all on board.
Undercarriage
Clean and dry conditions are found underneath with dual exhaust
running through FlowMaster mufflers and dumping under the car. The
brake set up consists of power assisted disc in front and drums in
the rear and suspension includes a Chevrolet S10 front clip with
coil springs and leaf springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
It's modified '42 inside and out and the modern seats are a welcome
upgrade and excellent place to pilot this highway star as we start
up the 305, listen to the sweet exhaust note and roll this rod onto
the test loop. No complaint here as the car moves out quickly,
handles well, and stops as it should. We note the left turn signal
not working and the brake lights work only when the headlights are
on. All other functions operate as they should and we're anxious to
get this one on the showroom floor and on websites around the
world. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A wild color, right combo of old and new, A/C and a CD player, and
just an overall nice build that will turn heads everywhere. If
you've been looking for a rod, especially one with a back seat and
trunk storage galore, this '42 Special Deluxe should be in your
sights.
