The 1934 Model 40 was available in an array of configurations;
Deluxe Coupe, 3 window coupe, Deluxe Roadster, Victoria, pickup,
Tudor Sedan and the Fordor Sedan. More than 240,000 Tudor sedans
were produced in 1934 and were priced between $530 and $580 at the
time.
For consignment, a 1934 Ford Model 40 Tudor sedan showing 5,855
miles, but that true miles are unknown due to a Maryland non actual
mileage status. According to our consignor, a Lincoln, Chevelle,
Ford Ranger, and Impala all may have contributed parts to create
this strong running build.
Exterior
With the exception of the rear fenders and lower pan, this steel
bodied street rod is covered in two stage Vineyard Green paint
hunkering down over yellow painted wheels with dog dish caps,
15-inch in front and 16-inch in back. Staggered size tires,
including the LT rated rears, help set the stance here which is
nicely planted and slightly raked. A Greyhound hood ornament leads
the way of the fine metalwork of the car which is all very nice and
includes the windshield reveal, cowl lights, and of course, the
epic grille itself. Blue dot tail lights, new old stock according
to our consignor, live on the rear fenders visually complemented by
the redline tire mounted to the back. Up top, the vinyl roof is in
great shape, capping the cabin and its elongated windows of nearly
the same width front and rear.At a distance, the car looks flawless
but our careful inspector finds some inclusions in the paint, a few
chips, edgewear, some bubbles at a body bend, scratches, a tiny
hole in the rocker, paint runs, and blistering.
Interior
Opening the coach style doors reveals handsome door panels dressed
in khaki door panels with debossed geometric patterns and a brown
insert, along with a pleated map pocket on each and they both
present cleanly. Inside, khaki also covers the leather bucket seats
with more looseness than tautness, reminiscent of early British
sports cars while the rear bench conforms to a more formed style
surrounded by monochromatic and clean walls. And speaking of
British cars, the driver gets a wood rimmed banjo style steering
wheel that fronts a padded and covered dashboard in brown taking in
vintage gauges with vintage style gauges towards the center
including an AutoMeter tachometer. You'll be pleased to find a
Vintage AC unit under the dash as well. A Hurst shifter rises from
the floor where tan carpet is deep pileand rides all the way up the
firewall. Tan and brown also make up the finished headliner and
overhead console that holds the AM/FM/CD player.
Drivetrain
Polished components and finned valve covers dress the engine, which
our consignor states is a 383ci stroker V8 with a solid cam and
lifters, Holley aluminum heads, roller rockers, and three 2-barrel
carburetors. It's mated to a Muncie M20 from a mid-60's Impala so
says our consignor, a 4-speed manual that sends power to the 10
bolt rear with 3.90 gears from a Chevelle, also per our
consignor.
Undercarriage
Driver quality clean underneath with solid structure and dual
exhaust that run through Turbo mufflers before exiting via chrome
tips out back. Drum brakes from a 40 Lincoln are on all four wheels
and suspension consists of a transverse leaf spring in front and
leaf springs in back. As mentioned, air conditioning is on board
and the car runs on a 12 volt system.
Drive-Ability
Just the right size, just the right height, and a comfortable
interior is what we're greeted with upon entering. The V8 starts up
and lets its presence known with a healthy exhaust note and we row
the gears around the test loop to find a fine running Ford,
straight tracking, and functions that work at 100%! While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
Here's a turnkey and air conditioned street rod with room for four
and likely more power than the Ford guys in the 30's could have
dreamed about. With some help from GM, this car runs strong and
according to our consignor, stays cool both in the cabin and under
the hood!
