GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this rare 1960 Buick Invicta
Estate Wagon, one of just 3,471 full-size Buick wagons produced for
the 1960 model year. Affectionately named "Harlow" after Harlow
Curtice, former president of General Motors, this Invicta is a
distinctive survivor with a fascinating history and nearly a
quarter century of ownership by its current caretakers. Originally
finished in Pearl Fawn, portions of the factory color remain
visible alongside the Charlotte Motor Speedway promotional wrap
that currently covers much of the exterior. The wagon retains its
unmistakable 1960 Buick styling, including sweeping body lines,
extensive chrome trim, quad headlights, and dramatic tailfins.
One of the most recognizable features of this Invicta is its
Charlotte Motor Speedway promotional wrap, commemorating the
inaugural World 600 held on May 29, 1960. The graphics feature
large Charlotte Motor Speedway lettering, World 600 branding, and
period-style racing advertisements along both sides of the wagon.
The wrap was installed in connection with the 50th anniversary of
the Coca-Cola 600 in 2010, when the wagon was used as a pace car
for the commemorative event. Rather than removing the graphics
afterward, the current owners elected to preserve them as a tribute
to the car's unique connection to Charlotte Motor Speedway. The
original Pearl Fawn finish remains underneath the wrap, with
sections still exposed. The result is an eye-catching piece of
automotive and motorsports history that stands apart from a typical
surviving station wagon.
Under the hood sits Buick's 401ci Nailhead V8, factory rated at 325
horsepower and featuring a 10.25:1 compression ratio. Power is
delivered through an automatic transmission to the rear wheels.
Equipment includes power steering, power brakes, and a factory
heater. The engine compartment retains its traditional Buick
appearance, while maintenance performed during the current
ownership includes a rebuilt carburetor, replacement belts and
hoses, updated fuel and brake lines, brake components, and other
routine service items. The wagon has also been treated to newer
premium whitewall tires, complementing its original-style wheels
and chrome hubcaps.
Inside, the Invicta features a spacious brown interior with
patterned bench seating, matching door panels, and a sweeping
dashboard that captures Buick's distinctive late-1950s and
early-1960s design language. The original-style steering wheel,
chrome dashboard accents, and period instrumentation preserve the
cabin's vintage character. The large rear cargo area offers the
practicality that made these full-size American wagons so
appealing, complete with a folding rear seat and two-piece
tailgate. Its expansive glass area and long roofline further
emphasize the impressive proportions of this classic Buick.
The current owners purchased the wagon in 2003 from the grandson of
its original owner in Flint, Michigan, during the Buick Club of
America's Centennial Meet. At the time of purchase, the car
reportedly showed approximately 57,000 actual miles, with much of
its earlier mileage accumulated through highway driving. Since
then, the wagon has remained in the same ownership for more than
two decades and has been maintained with an emphasis on
preservation and continued enjoyment. Maintenance records and
receipts covering much of the current ownership accompany the
vehicle, along with additional documentation of its Charlotte Motor
Speedway history. The wagon has also been regularly maintained with
premium motor oil, non-ethanol gasoline, and fuel stabilizer during
storage.
With its limited production, distinctive Nailhead V8, long-term
ownership history, and connection to one of NASCAR's most
recognizable events, this 1960 Buick Invicta Estate Wagon offers an
unusual combination of classic American styling and motorsports
heritage. Whether preserved in its current Charlotte Motor Speedway
livery or enjoyed as a vintage Buick station wagon, this Invicta
represents a unique opportunity to own a seldom-seen example of
Buick's full-size wagon lineup.
