"When you slip behind the wheel of a sports car like Corvette, we
think you have the right to accept three things: instrumentation,
comfort and convenience. 1972 Corvettes provide all three. Get
seated and look around. Immediately behind Corvette's steering
wheel, recessed deeply in circular pods, you'll see Corvette's
speedometer and tachometer. If you're getting the idea that
Corvette's standard interior is well stocked, you're getting the
right idea." From the 1972 sales brochure
For consignment, a 1972 Chevrolet Corvette convertible showing
2,425 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. This one retains its numbers matching drivetrain that
includes a 350ci V8 and Muncie M20 manual. Of the 27,000 Corvettes
produced in 1972, only about 6,500 of them were convertibles.
Exterior
Classic White in single stage covers the sweeping lines, coke
bottle curves, and iconic grated fender vents, here with a matching
white canvas soft top. Rising fenders border the hood which leads
to a raked windshield that forces air to flow over the top, finding
its way to the flat decklid that terminates with a subtle
integrated wing. One of the best views of the car is the rear where
the split bumper underlines the quad tail light configuration and
we don't think it's hyperbole to say "iconic" here. 15-inch
Polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are a nice addition
here and have staggered size tires with letters out. Imperfections
include general and overall aging to the paint and canvas top,
peppering of chips throughout, larger flakes, edgewear, dry seals,
flex cracking, pitted metals, broken fiberglass on the rear panel
and wheel flare, missing windshield trim, remnant hole from side
mirror, rust under windshield and on inner door structure and
jambs, crazing throughout, a missing marker lens, and a missing
exhaust tip.
Interior
Inside, Saddle vinyl and plastic door panels follow the laid back
lines in slanted geometric patterns and both are in need of repair
or replacement with tears and exposed foam. Browny vinyl bucket
seats have tall backs and are flat by today's sportscar standards,
and both seats show wear and on the driver's, missing material and
both with exposed piping. The aftermarket 3 spoke steering wheel
fronts a column that leads to a simple dashboard with two important
dials, speed and RPMs and the speedometer tops out at 160 mph. Less
immediate but just as important information is conveyed via a five
gauge pod located in the center stack. An AM/FM/CD radio has been
added and the center console which houses a T-handle shifter over
saddle carpet that shows some age on the driver's side but remains
very nice on the passenger side. The cargo area is missing some
trim and has some carpet remaining over the storage bins.
Drivetrain
The engine bay is uniformly flat black and houses the numbers
matching 350ci V8 with 200 horsepower and an Edelbrock 4-barrel
carburetor over a Weiand intake manifold. It's mated to a numbers
matching Muncie M20 4-speed manual with power being routed to the
rear axle with 3.08 gears and Positraction. Power steering and
headers are on board.
Undercarriage
Some patina but overall the underside is clean and solid. Dual
exhaust run through stock style mufflers just before exiting and
disc brakes are supplied to all four wheels. Suspension includes
coil springs up front and independent suspension in back with half
shafts, lateral struts, and transverse leaf springs.
Drive-Ability
The car starts and runs on starting fluid but the fuel pump appears
to be bad. Battery power allows us to test other component
functionality and all are in working order; gauges, radio. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for a project, why not start with this numbers
matching icon of an American sports car? Good bones here and with
some TLC, this could back in the running for a car show trophy in
no time!
