"Dodge model designations commonly seen for this period include
C-1, C-3, and C-4. Fargo Canadian market models commonly use FC,
(example: FC1, FC3, FC4), and some listings also reference FK.
Dodge and Fargo trucks in the same year/load class are often
mechanically similar, but regional production and equipment
differences can affect interchange." Vintagepowerwagons.com
For consignment, a 1956 Dodge C Series Stepside pickup with a title
verified 13,425 actual miles. Power steering, power brakes and a
rebuilt Hemi from 1954 make this red ride one to consider!
Exterior
Various shades of red cover the truck with the cab and front clip
retaining the brightest and most vibrant shade which shines
brightly. The doors and bed are still shiny but exhibit a lighter
shade due to cloudy clear coat, now offering both contrast and some
attractive patina. The unique hood is configured like the past,
even for 1956, where a fixed central band gives way to twin, hinged
covers that open sideways. The central band provides the space for
the Dodge emblem and callout over twin chrome bars of the grille.
15-inch wheels are color matched and include proper hubcaps and
beauty rings. Imperfections include some former rust in the seam of
the nosepiece, scratches, cracks throughout, paint runs, bubbling,
aged wood in the bed, deglazing on the windows, rust throughout
including through the rear fender and door, failing clearcoat,
rough bed conditions and chips throughout.
Interior
Black vinyl door cards show some patina, especially on the driver's
armrest which is cracked and discolored, telling the story of this
former worker. A simple black vinyl bench remains in good shape and
fronts the simplest of dashboard and a three spoke steering wheel.
A white perforated panel holds the basic gauges while the sculpted
dash itself remains glossy red. An AM/FM radio has been added under
the dash with a dancing grass skirt Hula girl on top. A rubberized
coating covers the floor and a wavy black vinyl panel serves as the
headliner and rear wall cover. A fixed rear window has flower
decals to simulate etched glass.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a rebuilt 241ci Hemi V8 from about 1954, with a
2-barrel carburetor and connected to a rebuilt A727 Torqueflite
3-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 9 inch
rear. The truck is equipped with power brakes, power steering and
air conditioning. The car runs on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
Typical surface rust is found on an otherwise cleaner underside
where dual exhaust runs through glasspack style mufflers and exits
on the sides. Brakes are divided as power disc up front and power
drum in back and suspension includes a Mustang II front end and
leaf springs in back. We note some rust on the door bottoms and
sides.
Drive-Ability
We think the starter wiring might be loose because she doesn't
always want to turn over and gives us the telltale click when it
doesn't. Once started and rolling, the truck provides good power
and tracks straight. We note the shift indicator does not match the
gear we're in and the voltage meter always reads 10 volts or less
no matter the RPMs. Meanwhile, all other functions on this classic
Dodge work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Hot dogs, baseball, apple pie and old Dodge trucks, sorry,
Chevrolet, sit this one out. It doesn't get much more Americana
than this restored relic of the 50's when trucks were purpose built
for working. As such, not many survived so to have a nice one in
our midst is a special treat. Imagine opening the garage to this
every day!
