1969 PLYMOUTH ROAD RUNNER CONVERTIBLE | 383 MAGNUM | NUMBERS MATCHING | 4-SPEED | 1 OF 769 | HONEY BRONZE | 95,334 MILES
One of just 769 Road Runner convertibles built with a 4-speed in 1969, with a 383 Magnum that matches the car and options most buyers never ordered.
THE CAR
In 1969, Plymouth built 769 Road Runner convertibles with a 4-speed manual gearbox. This is one of them, and with the options it carries, it is one of the most desirable configurations a Road Runner convertible can have.
The Road Runner was conceived as the no-nonsense muscle car: big engine, stripped interior, low price. That is exactly what makes a car like this so rare. Bucket seats, a center console, power steering, power disc brakes and a 4-speed were not what most buyers ordered. The vast majority left the factory with a bench seat, a column-shift automatic and nothing extra. This one was built differently, and it shows.
EXTERIOR
The car is finished in Honey Bronze, one of the more distinctive factory colors of the era, a warm metallic that catches the light beautifully and suits the Road Runner’s muscular proportions. The optional red stripe decals run the length of the body, and the matte black hood stripes are painted on, exactly as they left the factory. The body is straight throughout, with no signs of damage or patchwork. It is original metal, honestly presented.
The chrome is in excellent condition across the front bumper, grille, bezels, mirrors and door handles, and the rear bumper and taillights are equally clean. The door jambs are solid painted metal. The convertible power top is in like-new condition with the correct black Mopar grain, and the windshield is crystal clear. Magnum wheels are fitted, mounted on BFG redline radial tires that complete the period-correct look.
INTERIOR
Most Road Runners were bench seat, column-shift cars, and this one is not. The bucket seats and center console are correct and in excellent condition, and the 4-speed shifter rising from that console makes the cockpit feel exactly as a performance car of this era should. The upholstery, door panels and carpet are all in genuinely nice shape: unabused, tidy and honest throughout. The dash is uncut and intact, and the instrument panel presents well. The original AM 8-track radio plays clearly through the factory dual dash speakers. All six interior lights work, including the one above the ignition. A full set of original seat belts is present, along with new Road Runner floor mats.
DRIVETRAIN
The 383 Magnum is numbers matching to the car, confirmed by the VIN on the core support, the fender tag and two build sheets. The engine compartment is completely honest, with stock manifolds, valve covers, and a restored carburetor and air cleaner, all correctly finished in Mopar orange. It is spotless. Power steering and power disc brakes were specified from new, both uncommon on a Road Runner.
The underside is equally impressive: original dry metal throughout, clean floor pans and frame rails, no patchwork, and factory undercoating.
The car drives as well as it presents. It shifts smoothly, stops straight, rides properly and accelerates without hesitation. It does not need anything and is ready to drive.
