Some cars are built to look fast. Others are built to back it up.
This 1955 Chevrolet 210 Two-Door Sedan was engineered to do both,
combining old-school drag strip attitude with serious big-block
horsepower, proven performance components, and the comfort to take
on a cross-country road trip.
Finished in unmistakable 1970 AMC Big Bad Orange, this Tri-Five
Chevy brings the kind of presence that commands attention before
you ever turn the key. The radiused rear wheel openings, aggressive
stance, 15-inch Gasser ET front wheels, and deep-dish slotted rear
mags wrapped in Mickey Thompson ET Street tires give it a look
straight out of drag racing's glory days. But underneath that
vintage attitude is a meticulously engineered machine designed to
deliver far more than good looks.
THE HEART OF THE BEAST - 502 CUBIC INCHES OF BIG-BLOCK CHEVY
POWER.
Built by Dick Allen at Stroker Motors in Dallas, Texas, this 502
cubic-inch monster starts with a marine-based big-block Chevy and
features a balanced steel crankshaft, forged connecting rods,
forged pistons, and Edelbrock Performer aluminum cylinder heads. A
custom-ground Lunati roller camshaft, COMP Cams roller lifters and
stainless full-roller rockers, Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake, and
800 CFM Edelbrock carburetor complete the combination.
MSD Pro-Billet ignition, an MSD 6A control box, ceramic-coated
full-length headers, and a Carter high-output electric fuel pump
keep this big block ready for action.
And the numbers speak for themselves.
DYNO-PROVEN 520 HORSEPOWER AND 590 LB-FT OF TORQUE!
Even better, this engine was built with a pump-gas-friendly 10.5:1
compression ratio, delivering serious naturally aspirated
performance without requiring a steady diet of race fuel.
Backing the 502 is a Phoenix Transmission Products electronically
controlled 4L80E automatic overdrive transmission with a standalone
computer and a 2,600-2,800 RPM lockup torque converter. This isn't
some stripped-down race car that's miserable to drive on the
street. The overdrive transmission gives this Chevy the ability to
stretch its legs on the highway while keeping plenty of muscle on
tap when it's time to get serious.
Power travels through a custom heavy-duty driveshaft with
1350-series U-joints to a Ford 9-inch rear end equipped with Moser
31-spline billet axles, a Detroit Locker, and 3.70 gears.
Adjustable CalTrac traction bars help put that big-block torque to
the pavement.
The chassis received just as much attention as the drivetrain. The
frame was sandblasted and refinished, suspension components were
rebuilt, and custom Detroit Spring front springs were installed to
achieve the proper stance without sacrificing ride quality.
Steering improvements include rebuilt components and 1957 Corvette
20:1 steering gears.
Stopping power comes courtesy of Stainless Steel Brakes
Corporation, featuring 12-inch slotted front rotors with
dual-piston aluminum PBR calipers and rear disc brakes. A
heavy-duty Hellwig front sway bar helps keep everything
planted.
THE BODY - CLASSIC '55 CHEVY WITH A PURPOSE.
Starting with a solid, straight body, this Chevrolet underwent
extensive metalwork before receiving its eye-catching Big Bad
Orange finish by Jones Auto Body in Annetta, Texas.
The body was stripped to bare metal, with replacement floors, trunk
outer lip, and rear valance installed. The firewall, inner fenders,
and radiator support were filled and smoothed for a clean, finished
appearance. The body was removed from the frame, and all body
mounts were replaced.
The exterior was further refined with shaved side moldings, a nosed
and decked body, hand-polished stainless trim, new tinted safety
glass, fresh weatherstripping, and numerous new chrome components.
Out back, a custom chrome-plated Nomad rear bumper adds another
distinctive touch.
Inside, the build takes a different approach than the typical
bare-bones gasser. 1964 Impala SS front and rear seating has been
fitted with fresh upholstery and foam, complemented by custom black
vinyl door panels, black carpeting, and a gloss-black
dashboard.
Engine-turned stainless trim, updated instrumentation, an IDIDIT
tilt steering column, a leather-wrapped Grant steering wheel, and
Lokar controls bring together vintage style and modern
functionality.
Comfort wasn't an afterthought. Vintage Air heating, air
conditioning, and defrost, extensive Dynamat sound insulation, a
custom audio system with Kicker amplification, and upgraded
electrical components make this a car you can actually enjoy beyond
the local cruise night.
A custom four-point roll bar welded to the frame reinforces the
race-inspired character, while a professionally installed Painless
wiring system, trunk-mounted battery, and upgraded charging system
support the extensive electrical equipment.
Keeping the big block cool is a custom polished aluminum radiator
with dual electric fans, while the Vintage Air system helps keep
the occupants comfortable.
BUILT TO RUN HARD. BUILT TO GO FAR.
What separates this 1955 Chevrolet from the average big-block
Tri-Five is the thought behind the entire build. It wasn't designed
simply to make horsepower or sit around collecting trophies. It was
built to combine the raw character of a vintage drag car with the
engineering, comfort, and drivability of a serious street
machine.
From the dyno-proven 502 and electronically controlled overdrive to
the Ford 9-inch rear end, four-wheel disc brakes, custom chassis
work, and air-conditioned interior, every major system was selected
with a purpose.
