"Developed under Carroll Shelby, the CSC4000 series preserved the
character and essential architecture of the original big block
Cobra while incorporating selected improvements in chassis
rigidity, braking, reliability and driveability. Its original style
round tube chassis and unmistakable proportions retain the
elemental experience that made the 427 Cobra an American
performance icon." Consignor supplied information.
For consignment, a 1965 Shelby Cobra CSX4000 series 427 S/C
roadster with a title verified 1,093 actual miles. Six hundred and
fifty continuation cars were produced in the series and this
chassis number CSX4452.
Exterior
Built in 1996, this fiberglass bodied Cobra is draped in legendary
Guardsman Blue and lined with the requisite Wimbledon White strips
from nose to tail. Faithful features help make this car the icon it
is, including side pipes in satin black, a tubular roll hoop behind
the driver's seat, quick jack bumperettes front and rear, and the
unmistakable hood scoop. Cooling vents on the fenders cant forward
matching the angle of the nose while 15-inch Trigo Pin-Drive wheels
carry 26.5x8.0-15 tires in front and 26.5x10.5-15's in back under
flared fenders for the ultimate muscular profile. The gaping front
end exposes braided steel tubing and aluminum fans while in back,
modest rectangular tail lights cap the rounded rump. Imperfections
are few and include some rock spray, a few chips and a single
inclusion in the paint.
Interior
Simple black door panels with pockets help keep the weight down, of
course, and lead to a typically simple cockpit with black leather
bomber style bucket seats in great shape and each accompanied by a
race harness. The flank the carpet covered transmission tunnel from
which the chrome shafted shifter emerges with rubber accordion boot
bridging the gap. A three spoke steering wheel is wood rimmed and
spectacular, and it fronts the clean black dashboard with a variety
of Shelby branded gauges including the speedometer that spins right
to left terminating at 180 mph. The dash is also home to the
coveted numbered plaque, setting this car apart from all replicas
on the road. The vibrant Shelby logo is embroidered on the carpeted
floor mats fitted to the footwells and the trunk is lined with
formed fiberglass that remains spotless.
Drivetrain
Powering this legend is a legend unto itself; an aluminum block
427ci V8 side oiler V8 with aluminum heads and a Holley 4-barrel
carburetor, all good for about 600 horsepower according to our
consignor. Behind it, a TKX Tremec 3550 5-speed manual transmission
with overdrive for those highway runs. Naturally, the bay presents
as a gleaming environment.
Undercarriage
The tubular frame is accompanied by clean components including the
dual exhaust that emerge from headers and ride the sides. The fully
independent suspension consists of coil overs front and rear and
brakes are equipped with Wilwood disc brakes. Dry and dirt free,
this undercarriage could have rolled out Las Vegas yesterday!
Drive-Ability
A quick lap reveals a string of green checklists as the car does
everything well and of course, functions at 100%. We keep it clean
and head back to find the ideal spot in the showroom. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
We'll allow the supplied narrative to close here: "The Shelby
issued CSX identity, iconic color combination, premium all aluminum
side oiler, five speed transmission and exceptionally low mileage
come together in a Cobra that is visually authentic, mechanically
serious and genuinely usable. CSX4452 is equally at home in a
significant collection, on a Shelby event field or being
experienced on the open road". We could not agree more.
