"A special Chevrolet we'll practically custom tailor for you.
Impala Super Sport. You can make it as unique and personal as you
like. There are nearly 200 items you can have us add, from Four
Season Air Conditioning to keep you cool to a new TurboJet V8 to
keep it sizzling. This you may not believe. But even with as many
cars as we build, we could go through this entire year without
building any two of these Super Sports exactly alike." From a 1965
print ad.
For consignment, a 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS 2 door hardtop showing
65,371 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a PA title
exemption. This one's been garaged for the past 25 years and was
repainted in its original color around 2010.
Exterior
Mist Blue, code DD, presents in beautiful two stage coverage,
coating the enormous panels with the hue casting shadows on subtle
body lines. When mated with clean 15-inch Chevrolet Rally wheels,
chrome bumpers and stainless trim, it's an instant head turner.
Free of side molding and rocker trim, the smooth blue paint
receives some color through the red and blue Chevrolet emblems on
the decklid and nose, SS in the grille, and 327 crossed flag
emblems on the fenders. Take a long look at those iconic triple
tail lights; they're here with nice polished trim and blue dot
centers for those other than the reverse light. Imperfections are
few and far between. They include some filler dimpling and a chip
taken out of the passenger's rear window, and that friends, is all
we could find!
Interior
Blue vinyl door cards have a handsome stitched design and host the
cranks for the window and vent window, and both doors are in great
shape and feature a substantial carpeted insert. The front bucket
blue vinyl seats show very light use and combined with the rear
bench, remain in show quality condition. Blue and silver dominate
the front starting with the steering wheel showing some proper
patina and fronting a horizontal speedometer to 120mph, flanked by
a fuel gauge, tachometer and AM radio, all looking nice. Vent
controls line up with the stereo multiplex, a precursor to the
equalizer that would eventually be built in. Meanwhile, the center
console is a fantastic array of the SS emblem, chrome shifter, big
clock, and storage bin, all over black twist carpet and vintage
style rubber mats. The headliner is in great shape and the trunk is
covered with a vinyl mat showing some use over the spatter paint of
the trunk floor which shows some surface rust.
Drivetrain
Clean conditions prevail in the engine bay where we find a period
and date correct 327ci V8 with a Holley 4-barrel over an Edelbrock
intake, all good for 250 horsepower. It is set into motion though
the date correct Muncie M20 4-speed manual that sends power to the
date correct, see a pattern here,12 bolt with 3.31 gears and the
desirable Positraction. Power brakes and power steering are on
board.
Undercarriage
No complaints here as light patina mixes with some newer
components. The dual exhaust runs through an X-pipe, then
FlowMaster mufflers before terminating in the back. Power drum
brakes are on all four wheels and suspension is comprised of coil
springs front and rear with a 4 link in back. You can't miss the
bright yellow Bilstein shocks at each corner.
Drive-Ability
The 327 fires up with gusto and we roll this long car, all 213
inches, onto the test loop where we find good power and a
comfortable cabin for a capable car. We note a slight rattle in the
engine but unsure where it's coming from, the radio is not working
and the heater blower also fails to engage. Beyond these things,
the big bodied blue functions at 100%. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
