"The Fiero challenged US citizens to rethink everything about
American cars. It was mid engined. It had either a four banger or a
small displacement 2.8L V6. The handling was darty. The diving
position was not meant for hanging your arm out the window
or6ashing your Winston Salem. Keep both hands on the wheel! You
need them to turn because there is no power steering. The Fiero was
a love letter to small American backroads." Road and Track, Dec.
2015
For consignment, a 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT coupe with a title
verified 79,206 actual miles. Of the 26,402 Fiero's produced in
1988, only about 6,800 were GT's and half of those had an automatic
transmission. 3,812 of the GT's had a sunroof.
Exterior
Repainted by a previous owner in Medium Blue Metallic making this
unique as blue was not an option in '88. Inset marker lights front
an aerodynamic nose where pop up headlights maintain constant
airstream flowing back to a steeply raked windshield, then sailing
over the rear window which is framed in fastback style side windows
that create transparent flying buttresses around the vertical rear
window. Further out back, Pontiac continues its tradition of smoked
tail lights and expansive light bars by illuminating the make name
in the center section, and if you were a kid in the 80's, this was
as cool as it got. Big quad exhaust tips also pump up the raciness
of the sports wedge and a rear wing brings it to the next
level.15-inch lace style wheels carry slightly staggered size tires
and the sunroof takes up a good part of the roof's real estate.
Imperfections include some varying shades of blue, chipped and
cracking paint throughout, bubbling, inclusions, scratches, spots
of failing clear, scuffs on the rocker, delamination of the smoke
on the rear lens, flex cracks, and chin scrapes.
Interior
The door panels begin with gray plastic uppers over carpeted kick
panels that accommodate storage pockets and both present cleanly. A
bit of patina is also seen in the cloth bucket seats which are in
overall good condition and provide sporty side support. A sport
steering wheel presents to the driver in front of the instrument
cluster that is quintessentially 80's, with a textured gray
faceplate over gauges and a series of idiot lights arranged like
some kind of early computer schematic. The center stack contains a
few square gauges over the A/C panel and aftermarket AM/FM/CD
radio. The flat and square center console houses the shifter, a
stout T-shaped affair with a leatherette boot showing a touch of
age, followed by some weathered window switches and side mirror
controller and added cup holder. The gray loop carpet is in good
shape, the headliner around the sunroof is nice, and the visor
shows some looseness, not uncommon for the era's cars.
Drivetrain
Behind the rear glass is the hatch to the engine and within is a
2.8 liter V6 that is fuel injected and rated at 165 horsepower. It
makes quite a statement with its red plenum and valve covers in a
clean engine bay! This one is backed by a TH125 3-speed automatic
transmission sending power to the rear axle and 3.33 gears. Power
brakes and air conditioning are on board. There's a finished
compartment behind the engine for storage showing a few rust stains
but otherwise clean and intact.
Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust and patina on this well loved car and some
residual oil, but overall structurally sound and lacking build up
or dirt. The single exhaust finds its way to a glasspack style
muffler that sends out two tail pipes that turn into four
impressive exhaust polished tips. Front and rear suspension is
independent and consists of coil springs and power disc brakes
occupy all four wheels.
Drive-Ability
The little V6 comes to life with a nice exhaust note and off we go
onto the test loop where the car exhibits good power, certainly a
bit more than previous Fiero generations. It also handles well and
tracks straight. Demerits are awarded for the power locks that
don't work, the power mirrors that only move down, the passenger's
headlight motor that only open the lights partially, and the
incorrect tachometer which reads below zero at idle. Beyond these
items, all functions on GM's original mid-engine sports car work as
they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Ferrari has the prancing horse, Porsche features a stallion on
their crest, Mustang's horse is running across the grille, but the
Fiero logo has a horse with wings and depicted from above is a
clear nod to the screaming eagle of the Trans Am. Truth be told,
Pegasus was one of the working names used by Pontiac before they
decided on Fiero, which means very proud. And you'll be proud to
own this uniquely colored example of the increasingly desirable
