1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass S 2 Door Hardtop 442 Tribute
The word Cutlass is defined as a short curvy one edged sword that
was used by sailors. The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme was the best
selling car in Oldsmobile history. With its clean lines and
numerous model offerings, it is clear to see why. The "4-4-2" name,
(pronounced "Four-four-two"), derives from the original car's four
barrel carburetor, four speed manual transmission, and dual
exhausts. Some maintain that the '2' indicated positive traction
rear differential. It was originally written "4-4-2".
For consignment, a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass S 2-door hardtop 442
Tribute showing 57,791 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to
non functional odometer. What is known is that this Cutlass S
retains its numbers matching drivetrain and wears a unique,
eye-catching color.

Exterior
There's simply no way to miss this Sunflower Yellow paint that
covers this car in two stage beauty and serves as the perfect
backdrop for black highlights added to heighten the visual dynamics
of this 442 tribute. This includes black stripes on the hood that
give the visual illusion of scoops and thin lines track back to
frame faux vents. A mid body stripe rides over the wheel openings
and goes from the nose to the tail, complementing the black vinyl
roof. Pairings are common on the car and include twin headlights on
each side in black bezels, a split grille, sport mirrors color
keyed to the body, stacked triple tail lights, and twin trumpet
exhaust tips. The wing, however, is large and singular. 15-inch
Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels are also color matched and wear
235/60R15 tires with an mid 2025 date code. Imperfections include
flaws in the stripe, filler evidence in places, chips, cracked
paint, edgewear, bubbling, holes and rivets in the wheel opening,
scratches, and scuffs and surface rust on the bumper.
Interior
Simple and clean black vinyl door panels are accented with
simulated burlwood inserts and carpeted lowers and both are in nice
shape. The split bench, in black grain vinyl, is handsome in a
vintage 1970 kind of way with requisite button ornamentation and
horizontal stitch lines and both front and rear are immaculate. An
X is formed by the spokes of the sport steering wheel and it leads
to a very simple gauge cluster embedded on a burlwood faceplate and
includes an unused circle with gauge like indices and all of it has
some light patina. Vent levers and an AM/FM/Cassette radio live in
the black mid panel under a dash pad that shows several cracks. The
column shift cars allow for an open floor, here with black twist
carpet and 442 embroidered mats. The black headliner is loose but
intact and the trunk wears a cut to fit mat and shows some surface
rust on the stamped steel floor underneath.
Drivetrain
Clean and original, here we have the numbers matching 350ci V8,
fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and rated at 160 horsepower. It's
mated to its numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission
and power is routed to a 10 bolt rear axle and 2.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Super clean on the bottom side where the newer gas tank is evident
along with dual Pypes exhaust that runs through an X-pipe and
terminates 442 style through trumpeted tips. Our consignor states
the power brakes are newer as well; front disc and rear drum.
Suspension consists of coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in
back. Other than a small bit of filler on the frame, the underside
presents as clean and structurally sound.
Drive-Ability
We cruised it around the test loop carefully to check each function
available on the car while enjoying healthy acceleration, good
handling, crisp shifting, and impressive braking. We note the
speedometer, odometer and reverse lights are not working. Beyond
that, everything is in order. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Less than 10,000 4-4-2's were produced in 1972, while more than
78,000 Cutlass S left the assembly plants. That's why there's no
harm in creating a tribute that just happens to be based in a
numbers matching Cutlass S! It's like having the best of two
worlds
