"There's an old saying which sums up very nicely what our V8
powered Mustangs do extremely well. The shortest distance between
two points is a straight line.". A straightforward no nonsense
approach to delivering a large infusion of driving excitement over
a very short distance, and very quickly, this is what the Mustang
GT and Mustang LX 5.0 are all about, pure and simple." From the
1993 Mustang brochure.
For consignment, a 1993 Ford Mustang LX convertible showing 86,972
actual miles. In the five years of our consignor's ownership, the
car has received five AACA Preservation awards along with Junior
and Senior awards; a fitting and original pony car for the mall's
9000th consigned car!
Exterior
In what can be considered an iconic shade of 90's aquamarine, this
car is adorned with Bright Calypso Green from nose to tail
contrasted by the chrome 16-inch Chrome Pony wheels which are
wrapped in 245/50R16's. The third gen Mustangs may have started
with a defined grille in 1979, but by the 1980's that intake had
shrunk to some streamlined groves in the face, a design theme
shared across the Ford line for a number of years and exhibited on
our Stang. The rear treatment of the LX is subtly muscular, with
visible dual exhaust the GT tended to hide behind cladding, and a
luggage rack with a slightly wing-like edge over the third brake
light, mandated in the U.S. just 7 years earlier. From the side,
the 5.0 badge sets this car apart from the 4 cylinder and the white
canvas soft top above is in great condition with a glass window.
Imperfections include some chips, inclusions, edge peel, and touch
ups, but overall, it's in spectacular condition.
Interior
White vinyl door panels with contrasting black switch panels and a
pleated gray map pocket below are in great shape. Inside, white
leather bucket seats, simple and small by today's standards, were
sporty for the time and suffered the fate of most white leather
interiors; quick to show wear with some slight patina creasing and
staining in the driver's seat; the passenger's side and rear remain
almost pristine. Everything else inside is black and gray,
including the steering wheel with thumb buttons and an airbag, some
five years before they were mandated. The most basic of instruments
live in the cluster, simple digits on black background and white
needles. Equally as basic is the center stack with three knobs of
the A/C panel and push button AM/FM/Cassette radio. A clean version
of Ford's long running T-shifter and indicator plate resides in the
center console and gray carpet is covered by mats bearing the Ford
blue oval. The diminutive trunk is spotless and lined in gray
flannel cloth paneling.
Drivetrain
Looking much younger than its mileage would dictate, is a very
clean and nicely detailed 5.0 liter V8, fuel injected and putting
out 205 horsepower. It's mated to an AOD 4-speed automatic
transmission routing power to the Ford 8.8" in back with 2.73 gears
and TracLoc.
Undercarriage
Light patina and typical surface rust are present but the
underside, like the engine bay, tells the story of an 8,600 mile
car, not an 86,000 mile car, evidence that this is one pampered
pony. Dual exhaust starts at the factory headers and runs through
FlowMaster mufflers on its way to a polished straight pipe exit.
Power disc brakes and coil springs are up front while power drums
and a 4 link coupled with coil springs are in back.
Drive-Ability
Remember when 205 horsepower was teetering on quickness? Well, this
light car still feels spirited under the spell of those horses and
its square stance results in a pleasurable driving experience that
hundreds of thousands wanted to experience on one level or another
from Ford. Other than A/C, all functions on this nicely preserved
Calypso ride work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
This is not only an award winner but remains a potential car show
favorite; an absolute turnkey show car that you can enjoy as a
weekend joyrider as well. Top down or top up, this is one pony
worth putting in your stable!
