Zora Arkus-Duntov (December 25, 1909 - April 21, 1996) was a
Belgian born American engineer whose work on the Chevrolet Corvette
earned him the nickname "Father of the Corvette". He is sometimes
erroneously referred to as the inventor of the Corvette, whereas
that title belongs to Harley Earl. He was also a successful racing
driver, taking class victories in 1954 and 1955 24 Heures du
Mans.
For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Corvette with a title verified
71,592 actual miles. This California car retains its numbers
matching drivetrain including the 350 horsepower 350ci V8 and
Muncie M21 as well as a documented fully known history,
Protect-O-Plate and window sticker.
Exterior
This shark with its chromed bumpers and lower chromed egg crate
grille is in the sweet spot of the C3 years. Just prior to the
performance killing EPA emissions add ons, and still enjoying
chrome, the remainder of the body in fiberglass is a single stage
coverage of Monza Red. Silver edge trim on the side gills
accentuates the vents and the coveted scripted "Stingray" is above
each. The side mirrors, window trim, rocker panel trim and the
front and rear bumpers are in excellent condition. Meanwhile, body
colored T-tops split the roof and look great as 15-inch turbines
style wheel covers carry 225/70R15 redline tires at all four
corners. In back, the epic quad tail light design lives on a
vertical plane under the integrated and subtle rear spoiler, all
just beyond the flying buttress sail panels behind the rear window.
Imperfections are few and include two hairline cracks in paint and
a broken door corner.
Interior
A swing of the sculpted doors reveals the original interior, and we
see Saddle styled door panels which present nicely and include a
simulated wood insert and carpeted, wedge shaped kick panel. Inside
are Saddle leather high back buckets, column stitched and nicely
cushioned in very good shape. The dash, center console, steering
wheel center and carpet continue the saddle brown theme while black
covers the wheel rim and the faceplate of the center gauge cluster.
On the center console, features are highlighted on the black
plastic topped by a black knob shifter and everything appears in
nice condition. An AM/FM radio is on the center stack and in lieu
of a glove box, document/map pockets sit in front of the passenger.
Plush tan carpet covers the foot wells and the rear cargo area and
completes the features of this clean interior.
Drivetrain
And here it is in all its glory, the numbers matching 350ci L46 V8
rated at 350 horsepower and fueled through a 4-barrel carburetor.
It's mated to the numbers matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual
transmission routing power to the rear axle where it finds 3.36
gears with Positraction that replace the original 4.11 posi. Power
steering and power brakes are onboard and the bay presents
cleanly.
Undercarriage
We find clean and dry conditions underneath with just a film of oil
on the pan and minimal surface rust anywhere. The dual exhaust
cleanly runs through stock style mufflers and exits through chrome
square tips that fit into the trimmed gaps in the valance. Power
disc brakes are at both ends and the fully independent suspension
includes coil springs in front and a fully independent axle with
transverse leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
"Baby, you're much too fast, yes you are....". The 350 never left
home in this vintage Vette and provides plenty of power with great
acceleration, very good handling and solid braking. And the cherry
on top of this Monza Red Vette is that all functions work as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
The wide and low stance of the car...with legs stretched out in
front you...is reminiscent of a race car adding to the illusion
that you are a world champion in training making your way around
the Monza circuit! Here's a fantastic opportunity to land yourself
a desirable number matching Stingray from 1970. This one is show
and go worthy!
