Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL
Roadster. This W113 Pagoda is finished in a very attractive dark
green metallic with a matching hard top over bamboo interior (plus
a beige canvas convertible top). Excellent paint quality over a
very straight body with excellent shut lines and panel fitment;
glass-out repaint in 2020 still shows as nearly new. Bumpers and
exterior trim were either replated or replaced and present
beautifully. Euro headlights. Factory 14-inch wheels with
color-matched covers are wearing Vredestein Sprint Classics with
2022 date codes. Tidy underside with no known rust issues.
Interior presents nicely with bamboo MB-Tex seating surfaces and
attractive brown square-weave carpets; door panels, steering wheel
and interior wood and chrome trim are in very good condition. All
gauges are clear and working, aside from the clock. The A/C system
underwent a complete refurbishment in 2017, had been converted to
R134a, and is blowing cold. Correct Becker Europa stereo is fitted
but inoperative. The convertible top looks and works like new with
no damage or fraying to the canvas, and the plastic rear window
remains clear. The color-matched hard top is likewise excellent
with good glass, trim and headliner.
Under the hood is the original, numbers-matching 2.8 liter inline
six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Starts easily both
hot and cold and runs and drives well; clutch, gearbox and shift
linkage feel great. Complete suspension and brake refresh in 2017.
Based on notes in the records, the engine was fully rebuilt in
2013. Original owner's manual, stamped service book, comprehensive
service records dating back to the 1970s, and a factory data card
are included with the sale.
The 280SL was the most evolved iteration of the W113 chassis,
incorporating several refinements (including four wheel disk
brakes) and offering the most powerful engine. And of course Paul
Bracq's design is considered one of the best of the 20th century.
