Chrysler's legendary Hemi didn't reach the street in a Coronet
until 1966, which makes this 1965 Coronet 500 with a 472ci Hemi
feel like a bit of Mopar history rewritten the way racers wished it
had happened. It's a Texas car, rotisserie restored by a Dodge
master technician and kept in his private collection until our
recent acquisition. The build took five years, it has been featured
in Mopar Action magazine, and it's a past Best of Show winner.
Finished in a custom B5 Blue paint job, this Coronet looks the part
of a serious pro street car. A raised hood intake feeds the dual
carburetors, and the stance and hardware underneath hint at the
performance. The car is street legal, and the restoration shows in
every detail.
At the heart of the build is the 472ci Hemi V8 with a Comp Cams
solid lifter cam (.557 lift, 250 duration at .505), with valves
adjusted by Valley Performance. TTI ceramic coated 2 1/8 inch tube
headers feed a 3 inch exhaust with an H pipe and Flowmaster
mufflers, and dual Holley carbs are fed by dual Holley Blue fuel
pumps with twin filters from a custom fuel tank. MSD 6AL ignition
from Mopar Performance and Schumacher solid engine mounts with a
custom torque strap round out the engine. Power goes through a 727
TorqueFlite with a steel drum and a Coan 3800 RPM stall converter,
shifted by a Hurst pistol grip shifter with a manual valve body,
and a Hurst line lock is ready for burnouts. A 3.5 inch aluminum
driveshaft by Denny's Driveshafts, a 1350 U-joint with a Victory
billet yoke, and a Magnum HP driveshaft loop send power to a new
Dana 60 DTS rear with Strange axles and 3.54 gears.
The chassis has been built to match. A frame has been added and
tied to the unibody, with a custom roll bar and swing out entry
bars, new torsion bars, and new super stock leaf springs relocated
3 inches. Assassin adjustable traction bars, a pinion snubber, and
Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings keep the power in check.
Stainless Steel Brake front discs and Wilwood rear discs bring
modern stopping power, and a Firm Feel 20:1 steering box with a
Flaming River steering shaft coupler sharpens the handling.
Inside, Summit Racing seats with RJS 5 point harnesses make it
clear this Coronet is meant to be driven hard. A custom aluminum
dash holds Mopar Performance gauges, a Grant steering wheel sits in
the driver's hands, and the old column shifter has been replaced by
the Hurst floor unit. Painless wiring ties the whole electrical
system together.
This Coronet 500 is ready for light to light excitement or bracket
racing fun, and it's a rare chance to own a show winning, magazine
featured Hemi build that you couldn't come close to duplicating for
the price offered here.
