The Century Resorter earned a place in boating history by
pioneering the open interior layout. Earlier classic boats were
mostly runabouts divided by wooden decks into strict seating
compartments, and the Resorter's open cockpit became the standard
for the modern day cruisers and ski boats that followed. This 1951
example was bought out of a collection, has been extensively
restored in the last five years, and was in the water just a year
ago.
Because the Resorter featured a flat aft bottom that created clean,
flat wakes and tracked beautifully, it was chosen as the official
tow boat for the National and International Water Ski Championships
through the 1950s. That pedigree shows in its long, graceful
mahogany lines. The extensive restoration brought the boat back to
a presentation worthy of its heritage, and it turns heads at the
dock, at boat shows, and on calm summer evenings. In the early
1950s, Century shipped batches of these mahogany runabouts across
the country by railroad car to resort towns in the Midwest and
Pacific Northwest, which makes it a fun piece of postwar travel
history as well.
Power comes from a Graymarine Phantom Six 88, a 226ci inline six, a
smooth, dependable engine with real vintage character. It's simple,
authentic power that suits a boat of this era and delivers the kind
of relaxed, steady cruising the Resorter was built for.
Inside, red vinyl seating brings a bold, cheerful pop of color to
the open cockpit and keeps the layout clean and classic. The
seating was part of the extensive restoration, giving the boat a
fresh, welcoming look that matches the quality of the rest of the
work.
The Century Boat Company was founded in 1926 and officially marks
its 100th anniversary this year, and collector interest in vintage
wooden models is seeing a renewed wave of appreciation. This
Resorter is a great chance to own a restored, collection sourced
piece of that history, ready for show season, lazy lake days, and
plenty of admiring looks.
