"Despite the antics of the overwhelmed tires, hard acceleration
still leaves the driver giddy - at least for the first few runs. We
certainly can't argue with this kind of performance from a family
sedan - there's that 0-to-60 time of 5.6 seconds, the quarter mile
turns in 14.2 seconds at 101 mph, and the ungoverned top speed is
154 mph. Much to our surprise, the SS turned out to be 0.1 second
faster from 0 to 60 and in the quarter mile than the identically
powered but 132 pounds lighter Grand Prix GXP we tested last fall."
Car and Driver, June 2006
For consignment, a 2006 Chevrolet Impala SS sedan with a title
verified 12,632 actual miles. Less than 20,000 SS's were produced
in 2006 and you've probably seen one on the street, but don't bat
an eye as this sleeper gives off the ultimate commuter car
vibes.
Exterior
More than 8,000 Impala SS left the factory in Black paint and even
in 2006, the aging W-platform presented as a run of the mill
Impala. But those in the know will seek out the badging afforded
all sides but absent from the grille, and the special wheels,
18-inch five spokes inspired by the Mercedes S600 and wrapped in
beefy for the class 235/50R18 tires. There is also a rear wing
here, and the iconic Impala badge on the C-pillars, a nod not only
to the model, but heritage associated with the mid 90's sedans.
Finally, dual exhaust peek out from the valance and a mesh grille
fills the front; the radar of car lovers will pick up these cues
and recognize the somewhat mythical SS. Imperfections are few on
this well preserved example and include inclusions, small chips,
and some light surface scratches.
Interior
Open up this time capsule to find formed plastic door panels,
handsomely configured and with some simulated wood trim on the
fronts. Turning inward, you'll find the optional black leather
seats with SS embroidered onto the headrests and a rear bench and
all seats present in excellent condition. Up front, the wood
colored trim breaks up the Ebony palette and adds some pedestrian
warmth while the leather wrapped steering wheel fronts a simple
instrument cluster made a touch more vibrant with red highlights. A
plastic forest also surrounds the center cluster where you'll find
the AM/FM/CD radio and GM's standard A/C panel for the time. A
simple and elegant shifter lives in the console over charcoal
carpet and weather mats, all in great shape. A sunroof and its
console are on the ceiling along with a formed headliner, gray and
clean. The trunk and its gray panels are showroom pristine.
Drivetrain
Here's the magic sauce in this recipe; a 5.3 liter LS4 V8 putting
down 303 horsepower and mated to a 4T65E 4-speed automatic that
keeps power to the front wheels through 3.29 gears. A clean shroud
exclaims "Displacement on Demand" and the bay itself is in spotless
stock configuration.
Undercarriage
Chrome tips come at the end of the single exhaust that splits
towards the end and runs through original equipment the whole trek.
Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and suspension is composed
of Macpherson strut and coil spring with trailing arms on the
independent back. The SS is equipped with special anti-roll bars
not found on mere mortal Impalas.
Drive-Ability
No surprises here as this low mileage car from 20 years ago feels
fresh and tight. Obvious power underfoot, a clean and comfortable
interior, and a car where everything onboard functions exactly how
intended. The car is on its original tires so new ones are in order
unless you're displaying this car at a museum. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
Because of their functionality and relative invisible status, SS's
were used as daily drivers, so to find one in this condition out of
the 20,000 produced, is a rare occurrence indeed! This is one
stealthy performance sedan that has flown under the radar for
years. Now, at 20 years old, their uncommonness is sure to prompt
collectability.
