Some Chevelle factoids to whet your appetite. The Chevelle was
built in 10 different plants in two countries during its 10 year
run. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canada
that had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called the
Beaumont. 1964 was the only year U.S. built Chevelles had the model
listed as the first digit in the VIN. No Chevelles originally had a
woodgrain console. If you see one with a woodgrain console now,
it's likely from a Monte Carlo. The Chevelle is quite the movie
star, appearing in over 1,600 shows and movies. It's had starring
roles as recently as the Fast & Furious franchise.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle convertible
showing 74 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Owned by our
consignor since 1986 and restored in 2006, we can't exactly call
this car a "sleeper" due to its vibrant and muscular exterior and
claimed 307ci V8, but let's just say you don't want to be napping
at a red light if winning is your goal.
Exterior
The car is finished in two stage Matador Red paint with an accent
stripe that transverses the nose, follows the descending line of
the fender, then streaks along the rocker panel, terminating at the
rear bumper as it wraps around. Smooth panels dominate the body and
dual rising swells on the hood lead back to twin cowl vents. 307 is
expressed on the fenders. Is that what powers this Chevelle? Read
on to find out! Meanwhile, thin horizontal tail lights connect
visually via a red trim piece on the latch panel, as straight as
the chrome bumper below it, and over big exhaust tips below.
15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels carry staggered width
70 series tires and a slight rake, a little bit leaner and a little
bit meaner than your run of the mill Chevelle. Overall the paint,
bright work and black canvas top are nice with imperfections noted
as bubbling on the hood, rear quarter and door, chips, deplating on
the bumper, and orange peel.
Interior
White vinyl on the inside provides a vibrant contrast and the door
panels retain the typical 60's use of patterned with linear designs
in a monochromatic presentation, a touch of patina on the driver's
side. Inside, white vinyl bucket seats that are in good shape and
so is the rear bench, each with button ornamentation and some very
slight discoloration. Up front, a 3 spoke sport steering wheel on
tilt column fronts the simple, standard instrument cluster
including a barrel style tachometer while in the center, just the
vent panel and levers are present with no radio. The always fun
horseshoe shifter is in the center console over black twist carpet
in nice condition. The trunk has a vinyl mat over a steel floor
with some light surface rust.
Drivetrain
Here's where the rubber meets the road with a 350ci V8 equipped
with a Scat 9000 series crank, forged I-beam rods, forged sealed
flat top pistons, Comp magnum roller tip rockers and a Comp Cams
290H cam. It's fueled by a Holley 4-barrel over a Weiand intake and
is mated to a rebuilt TH350 3-speed automatic transmission sending
power to the 12 bolt rear axle with 2.56 gears and Positraction.
Headers, power brakes and power steering are on board.
Undercarriage
Some typical patina and surface rust but otherwise a clean and
solid underside. The dual exhaust runs through Pypes muffler on
their way to a chrome tipped exit. Power brakes include front disc
and rear drums and suspension consists of coil spring at both ends
with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
The V8 comes to life with an impressive exhaust roar making it
immediately evident this is not your grandfather Chevelle! Around
the loop we go where the car exhibits good power, straight
tracking, and with the top down, unlimited visibility. The hazard
lights will not turn off and other items that are not working
include the horn, clock, tachometer, and turn signals. All other
functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Yes, with the top down you can see forever! But that also means
people see you, so get ready for some eye contact on the road
followed by the inevitable thumbs up. This is a striking classic
and who doesn't love a top down muscle car? Put your money down on
red; this one's a winner!
