1993 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Mark III Conversion Short Bed
Pickup
"Founded in 1978 in Ocala, Florida by R. Thad Boyd Jr., Mark III
Industries became the nation's largest conversion van and custom
truck manufacturer. At its 1980's and 1990's peak, the sprawling
I-75 facility employed over 1,600 workers and produced hundreds of
luxury custom vans and pickup trucks daily. The company shuttered
and filed for bankruptcy in 2001, and the derelict plant sat
abandoned until its demolition began in 2021." Ocala Gazette, July
2021
For consignment, a 1993 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Mark III
conversion showing 13,006 miles which are believed to be actual,
but the true mileage is unknown. This interesting vestige of the
90's has always been garaged and it shows; it's clean inside and
out and represents a relatively popular trend in the late 80's and
early 90's with companies such a Choo Choo Customs, Tiara Motor
Coach and others catering to the desire for vans, trucks, and El
Caminos that stood out from the crowd.
Exterior
Taking monochromatic to a new level the Dark Hunt Club Red Metallic
doesn't just cover the body of the truck, but now covers the added
body cladding, the bed rails, the bed cover, and the entire
eggcrate grille including the bowtie! The cladding around the wheel
openings allowed for deep dish wheels and wider tires, 15-inch ARE
wheels and 275 series tires tuck neatly in the opening with the
body kit making the truck appear low. Out back, headlight covers,
popular as part of this conversion but also available at the local
Pep Boys at the time, here color matched with the truck. It's all
in remarkably good condition with imperfections noted as some
scuffs on the door's window frame, a few minor scratches and chips,
and scuffs to the plastic black bumper cover. The bed is mint and
wears a fitted floor covering.
Interior
We're finding showroom conditions inside with the wood added as
part of the conversion looking fresh with trim pieces on the doors,
at the base of the seats and as an overlay on the dashboard.
Inside, the Mark III gets plush leather bucket seats and a fold
down center console with a wooden cupholder. The standard steering
wheel fronts the real wood of the dashboard which is also the
standard configuration of simple gauges, an AM/FM radio, A/C panel
and towards the middle, a cassette player with digital EQ. Red
carpet remains in great shape as does the headliner augmented with
a wood framed overhead console.
Drivetrain
The bay presents cleanly and holds the 5.7 liter fuel injected V8
with 210 horsepower tied to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission
that routed power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.42 gears, a
configuration that was ubiquitous on GM cars and trucks of the era.
The engine, like much of the rest of the truck, looks original and
as clean as day one.
Undercarriage
Typical light surface rust covers untreated components and the
driveshaft on this otherwise spotless underside. A single exhaust
runs through original equipment, leaving the muffler through two
tailpipes the curve to exit behind the rear wheel through chrome
tips. Power brakes are here as front disc and rear drum and
suspension is standard front coil springs and rear leaf
springs.
Drive-Ability
Stepping into this time capsule, we unleash the 5.7 onto the test
loop to find decent power and good handling despite the original
tires that have a 1992 date code. We note the truck pulls slightly
right when first braking, the radio turns on but no sound is
emitted, the truck doesn't seem to have full power at highway
speeds, and the rear power sliding window is not working. All other
functions on this classic conversion work as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
What makes this truck unique and stylistically dated is exactly
what makes it classic and desirable. Maybe you were a kid at the
time and thought these were the coolest things on the road. Here's
an opportunity to finally get your hands on one in about as new
condition as you're going to find!
