Between the Stylelineand Fleetline, the Specials and Deluxe models,
Chevrolet produced around one million cars in 1949 for an
optimistic nation. Of them, about 10%, or 130,323 examples were
Fleetline Deluxe 4 door sedans. Price was still the driving factor
for competitor so Chevrolet's 1949 taglines included, "The Most
Beautiful Buy of All" and "First for Quality at Lowest Cost."
For consignment, a 1949 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe 4 door sedan
with a title verified 95,431 actual miles. Once the daily driver of
a college student and getting her to work in a new career, the
retired Fleetline then spent many years in storage.
Exterior
Although the single stage Mayland Black paint suffers from
widespread checking and some surface rust, the panels remain mostly
straight, which is a good thing on a big car that has a dramatic
shape, lots of trim, and articulated rear fenders. In profile,
you're looking at a car that is in motion while standing still,
front and fenders surging forward while the split windshield leans
back and the sloping tail end seems to squat, a stance accentuated
by the fender skirts over the rear wheels. Big chrome rides the
front in epic fashion while a red plastic ornament reaches forward
with a glow that would make Rudolph envious. All trim is in place
including the rocker trim that connects a pair of gravel guards.
Imperfections include checking throughout, surface rust on the
bumper fill panels and rocker panels, cracks and deglazing on some
glass, scratches, a ding on a rear door, rust at rear wheel
openings.
Interior
Tan and brown alternation the cloth door panels in original
configuration and showing some age, with the driver's door showing
the most including staining and a tear. Striped broadcloth covers
the bench in front and the big rear seat, and both are in decent
condition and rear passengers are afforded a robe loop to hang
their shawl. Patina continues on the brown steering wheel and its
wonderful design that leads to the dashboard with a single dial
that houses four gauges in addition to the speedometer and
odometer. Ivory buttons and knobs dot the dashboard along with a
chrome grille and elegant little clock. The clean floor wears a
full rubber mat and the mohair headliner is fully intact. A large
trunk is also clean and houses two spares.
Drivetrain
Unrestored and in driver condition, here we find a 216.5 inline six
cylinder under the long hood, pushing 90 horsepower with a 1-barrel
carburetor. It's mated to a 3-speed manual on the tree, sending
power to the rear axle with 4.11 gears.
Undercarriage
A newer gas tank highlights the otherwise driver quality underside
with full patina, a bit of rust on the pans, and oil noted in
several places including the rear differential. Suspension includes
coil springs in front and leaf springs in back, drum brakes are on
all four wheels, and a single exhaust travels through a stock style
muffler before finding an exit in back. The front part of the
exhaust and muffler seem new and our consignor reports a new
electric fuel pump and regulator which is visible in the bay.
Drive-Ability
Plenty of room for college books and lots of roommates in this big
interior where we fired up the six cylinder and rolled this big
Fleetline onto the test loop. The car tracks straight and runs well
with good visibility through the long greenhouse. The horn, clock
and radio are not working but all other functions afforded the
driver of this fine '49 are working as intended. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for a drivable project with good bones, epic
style, and incredible potential, here is your proverbial diamond in
the rough. With some paint and TLC this classic Chevrolet can
graduate to the next level and you don't need a college degree to
recognize that!
